VQ Podcast: Takeaways from a busy NFL Draft & another baseball sweep
Tennessee football was busy and active throughout the weekend during the 2023 NFL Draft as five Volunteers were selected through the first three rounds while five others signed undrafted free agent deals with respected NFL clubs.
Darnell Wright highlights the class as the offensive tackle went 10th overall to the Chicago Bears. Is the former five-star an immediate plug-and-play prospect and why did the pick make so much sense for both sides? Hendon Hooker slid to the third round, where three other teammates quickly followed. How big of an impact can this have on recruiting?
Tennessee baseball is up to seven-straight wins after back-to-back sweeps in Southeastern Conference play. The latest came against Mississippi State as the Vols found three different ways to win each contest. Has the team officially turned the corner and what needs to happen to secure a postseason spot and maybe even a home regional?

What the Volquest guys are saying about Tennessee
Brent Hubbs on Tennessee’s showing in the 2023 NFL Draft….
“My biggest takeaway from the draft in general is there are too many versions of a mock draft. There’s too much out there – too much movement with guys. I think that’s a reminder to me – and I like the draft as much because Tennessee hasn’t been as involved. But I hadn’t followed it day-by-day as I have. But when you have Hendon Hooker in the first round and the same guy two weeks later has him out of the first round. He ends up going in the third round – there’s just a lot of false narratives out there. I think that’s something that is a cautionary tale. It’s a reminder that there is a whole lot of guessing going on. And there’s some movement going on I think to draw some interest and some storylines.”
Eric Cain on Tennessee baseball’s sweep over Mississippi State….
“You did what you were supposed to do. You found your footing and turned the season around with Vanderbilt in sweeping fashion. Then you host a Mississippi State team where the offense has a little pop to it, but there’s just no pitching on that staff. It’s probably the worst staff in the league and it’s not close. Even when they got behind early on in every single game, you knew it was far from over. Tennessee’s bats came alive. What was impressive was they found different ways to win. They had a big lead Thursday night. Gave it up and Griffin Merritt walks it off. They were trialing by five runs on Friday in game two and came from behind to win by four. And on Saturday they just smashed and won in run-rule fashion. They looked good and did what they were supposed to do. You can see that lineup deeper and deeper.”
