Quote of the Podcast
Brent Hubbs on the need (or lackthereof) for a Tennessee 1,000-yard rusher….
“I think it’s the most overblown stat out there. A thousand-yard rusher. I think you’ve got to look at what your total rushing yards are. What you average per carry – those types of things. I think in this day in age, if I’m a running back and these guys are more polished than they’ve ever been, I’m not looking to go somewhere and get 30 carries a game. I don’t want to be worn out when I com out of college. I’m fine with a platoon system and a couple of guys. I don’t know if they’ll have one, unless someone gets really hot or there’s se injuries. You look at this running back room right now, they are deeper than they’ve ever been. It probably makes less sense for them to have a 1,000-yard rusher this year than it would have been the past couple of years. But I look at what Josh Heupel has done in the run-game, and they are running it really, really well – whether it’s with two people or three people. Whatever the case may be. I think that stat is going a little bit by the wayside in the college game because I don’t think it’s as big of a benchmark as it used to be because I don’t think they want to wear guys out.”
