Vol Club Confidential: The Herring Brothers

Brothers Elijah and Caleb Herring grew up in the state of Georgia before moving to Tennessee. The former Murfreesboro Riverdale standouts are back together again on Rocky Top and thriving in orange.
“I’d say it was kind of a struggle,” Elijah said about the year they spent apart being one year different in age. “Being with him every single day, we did everything. We worked out and trained together. It was weird at first but that’s just life.”
The change was roughest on Caleb as he was forced to grow on and off the field his senior year.
“At Riverdale once he had left it was tough at first,” Caleb said. “I was used to him leading us. I caught myself stepping up into that leader role and I took over.”
Caleb arrived to campus in January at 206 pounds. He was nearly 230 by the time spring practice started earlier this month.
“It was crazy and I wasn’t expecting to put on this much weight,” Caleb said. “Ethan really helped me get my weight up and tell me things to eat. Tennessee don’t tell you what to eat but they make you responsible to go down to Smokey’s and put on the weight.
“I needed that person that would push me and Elijah is that person. He would notice things and tell me to do better.”
That’s what has made the last two months so much fun for these two tightly bonded brothers, while at the same time missing their mom Tiffany.
“It’s a struggle because I’m a momma’s boy,” Elijah said. “You always think about them and are they safe.”
Elijah had a strong freshman campaign on special teams and flashed when he got in on defense. He made three tackles and recorded a pair of sacks in the span of three plays to wreck a drive in the third quarter in win over Akron. His familiarity helped Caleb when he missed home.
“Those first two weeks I was homesick,” Caleb said. “I just wanted to go back home. Having him around helped me get adjusted.”
