Virginia walks off vs. Mississippi State due to costly error, advances to regional final
In game four of the Charlottesville Regional, the host team, the Virginia Cavaliers, was able to pull off a come-from-behind victory on Saturday to advance to the regional championship game.
Virginia was able to narrowly edge out Mississippi State with a walk-off single to give them the 5-4 victory. You can check out the Cavaliers game-winning hit in the video below
Cavaliers center fielder Bobby Whalen was the one to call game with his RBI single. Up until that point, Whalen did not have a hit in the game.
Virginia found themselves fighting out of an early deficit against the Mississippi State Bulldogs. After taking an early 2-0 lead, the Bulldogs responded with a three-run home run courtesy of Hunter Hines. The Bulldogs would tack on one more run to give themselves a 4-2 lead in the fourth inning before Virginia responded back, adding two runs in the 7th inning to tie the game at 4-4. Virginia had a chance to end the game with the opening hitter of the 9th inning, infielder Harrison Didawick. Didawick nearly smashed one over the left-center field wall, but it was just short, resulting in the ball bouncing over the fence for a ground rule double. Still, no matter, as Virginia was able to pick up the win and is now just one win away from advancing to the Super regional round.
