ARLINGTON, Texas — Day 1 of Big 12 media days is in the books and while Oklahoma isn’t speaking until Thursday, plenty of questions about the Sooners came Wednesday.
Two of Oklahoma’s biggest rivals, Texas and Oklahoma State, spoke on Wednesday at AT&T Stadium, along with five other teams.
The Longhorns enter as the conference’s preseason favorites, topping the media preseason poll. But Texas knows it has work to do in the Big 12, failing to meet similar expectations in the past.
“I expect our team to play aggressive, tough, fast, physical, and smart football every Saturday,” Texas coach Steve Sarkisian said. “If we do that every Saturday, we’ll put ourselves in a position to be competing for a championship.
“Ultimately, we all — if you ask any one of our players, they want to be here December 2 competing for a Big 12 Championship. That’s simple. But we have to do the necessary things day in and day out to try to make that happen.”
Meanwhile, Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy stirred the pot by talking about the future of Bedlam. Gundy said Oklahoma is to blame for the rivalry ending and doesn’t care if the game is never played again.
“The Bedlam game is over because Oklahoma chose to leave the Big 12, period,” Gundy said. “It’s not nothing to do with Oklahoma State.”
