Vance Honeycutt, Parks Harber describe their urgency knowing their careers are ending
No matter how the next week or so plays out, North Carolina seniors Parks Harber and Vance Honeycutt will end their college baseball careers on Charles Schwab Field.
The road to Omaha was long and laborious for these Tar Heels, and the eldest among them aren’t taking the trip for granted, soaking up the incredible opportunity before it, and their collegiate careers, have passed by. When asked about playing out their final college games on the biggest stage, Harber and Honeycutt were nothing but grateful.
“For me. just really excited and grateful for four years of hard work, and I get to finish here,” said Harber. “I think I’m just super fortunate to play my last game of college baseball in Omaha.”
Isn’t that every player’s dream? That’s certainly the case for Harber, who has his eye on winning the whole thing.
“I think this opportunity is really special. So I don’t want to put any extra pressure on myself. I just want to go out there and do the things we’ve done all season, knowing I really, really want to finish my career with a national title.”
Honeycutt was more laid back in his approach to such a big stage, trying to quell any nerves by remembering that baseball is baseball, no matter where the field is.
“I don’t think it changes day to day. It’s the same game, just on a bigger stage,” he commented. However, even he admits the experience is something worth remembering.
“I think just being able to really soak it in, but also understand the real reason why you’re here and just really have fun with it. Honestly, just soak it all in with these guys.”
Harber would later add that he merely feels lucky to get to compete at such a venue and on such a stafe.
“Just super fortunate, super grateful to be here. Really going to enjoy all this and all the media and all the events. Really looking forward to it.”
For him, the idea of playing with a national title on the line is pretty exciting.
“Also, knowing that we are here to play baseball and to win a national championship, I think it really cool to step out on that field, and it’s a beautiful stadium. But at the end of the day, we want to come home with the trophy. So, staying focused on that goal.”
The North Carolina players are obviously thrilled to get to play in Omaha for the championship, but they’re also soaking in these last few days and weeks of their careers.
