V-Cast: Michigan State looking to build on solid performance in opener
East Lansing, Mich. – Michigan State has a lot to feel good about coming off a 31-7 win over CMU in Week 1 in front of a full house at Spartan Stadium. The Spartans saw their defense play well throughout the game, holding their opponent under 100 yards in the pass game and 219 yards of total offense.
In Week 2, Michigan State gears up for an opponent in Richmond that has a solid defensive line and a history of making the playoffs on a regular basis at the FCS level. The Spiders are coming off a humbling loss to Morgan State, a team against which they were heavily favored in Week 1. While it remains to be seen if the level of competition is comparable to CMU, the goal for the Spartans, however, remains the same. The Spartans are looking build on what they did well in the opener and clean up areas where they were lacking.
After interviews on Tuesday, SpartanMag staffers Jim Comparoni and Paul Konyndyk revisited some of the good and the bad from the Michigan State opener, including a run-game operation that needs to continue to improve for the Spartans to overperform expectations this season.

TOPICS COVERED
Noah Kim: Michigan State’s Week 1 opener was a confidence-builder for starting quarterback Noah Kim, who showed poise in overcoming a slow start as well as confidence in unproven playmakers at the wide receiver position. Kim’s willingness to spread the ball around to unproven players is refreshing given that it is something that hasn’t happened much in recent years at Michigan State.
Pass Defense: Aside from a touchdown that was given up on a play that CMU hadn’t shown on film, the play from Michigan State’s defensive backs was solid in this game. The Spartans did not give up an explosive play in either the run or the passing game against CMU. And while CMU did not go downfield with its passing attack, it was refreshing to see Michigan State defensive backs playing solidly in run defense and playing with physicality.
Wide Receivers: One of the biggest storylines during Week 1 of the football season for Michigan State was the play of its unproven wide receivers. Sophomores Jaron Glover and Tyrell Henry both made significant impacts for the Spartans on offense. The same is true of junior wide receiver Christian Fitzpatrick, who has waited a long time to get substantial game reps for the Spartans.
