V-Cast: Countdown to Michigan State vs. Kansas State
New York, NY – Michigan State is in the Sweet 16 for the 15th time in the last 25 seasons, and just two wins away from a trip to the Final Four. Before the Spartans can begin to dream about cutting down nets, they’ve got to get past Kansas State.
After interviews on Wednesday, SpartanMag staffers Jim Comparoni and Paul Konyndyk check in from courtside at Madison Square Garden for V-Cast:
Tyson Walker vs. Markquis Nowell: New York point guards are tougher to find than they were a decade or two ago when every other team seemed to have a NYC point guard on its roster. This game, however, is a throwback of sorts, featuring two New York City point guards going head to head in the Madison Square Garden. Nowell, who is averaging 20 points and 10 assists over the last four games is one of the most charismatic point guards in the game. Tyson Walker, by contrast, is a complete player, more than capable of winning games on both ends of the floor.
Will this be a track meet? Michigan State players seem to think that they will be able to run against Kansas State, which is right at home in a track-meet style game. The big question for the Spartans is whether 40 minutes of running advisable. At what point does pushing the tempo become counterproductive? What seems more likely is that Michigan State will pick its spots to run.
Making Open Shots: Michigan State is probably going to get good looks in this game. Kansas State isn’t as good a defensive team as the one that the Spartans faced in the Round of 32 against Marquette. Be that as it may, Michigan State still needs to be able to hit shots, which is something they struggled to do last time out.
