USC drops multiple spots in AP Poll following win against Arizona State
A win is a win, but when it comes to rankings, the adjectives matter as well. And after a sloppy, disjointed, 42-28 win against an Arizona State team plagued by injuries and seen as a pushover, USC fell three spots in the newest AP Poll, landing at No. 8.
It was the biggest drop of the week for any team that won its game. And it also means USC’s run as the top-ranked Pac-12 team is over. The Washington Huskies moved up a spot to No. 7 following a 59-32 win against Cal that was 43-12 at halftime. Not only did the Huskies move in front of the Trojans, but Washington also received a first-place vote in this poll. They are one of six teams with a first-place vote in this week’s poll.
USC saw two future opponents fall out of the poll. No. 19 Colorado suffered a lopsided defeat at Oregon and No. 22 UCLA dropped out after a 14-7 loss at Utah.
The Trojans still have the whole season in front of them and major opportunities to leap up the rankings. A road trip to No. 11 Notre Dame is just a few weeks away. The Fighting Irish dropped just two spots after taking now-No. 4 Ohio State down to the game’s very last play in a close loss. Washington will visit the Coliseum on No. 4. The Trojans will also travel to No. 9 Oregon and will host No. 10 Utah.
