USA Basketball: The Latest Recruiting Intel on Dylan Harper, Kiyan Anthony, and Other Top Prospects at the Junior Minicamp
Eighty-four players gathered in Colorado Springs, Colorado, for the 2023 USA Basketball Junior National Team October Minicamp this weekend. Players from the 2024, 2025, 2026, and 2027 classes attended in this invite-only setting to try and make next summer’s USA Basketball roster. While much of the focus was on how the players performed on the court, there was plenty of conversation about their recruitment as well. Let’s discuss some of the intel from players at the USA Basketball Junior National Team October Minicamp.
Five-Star Plus+ CG Dylan Harper
The Buzz: Dylan Harper’s recruitment has long been thought to be a Duke and Rutgers battle. In speaking with him, he says that Auburn, Kansas, and Indiana are all three still in the mix. To this point, he has not taken or scheduled an official visit with Auburn or Kansas. One source source said to continue watching Duke and Rutgers. There is some recent movement as he is looking to take an official visit to Rutgers next weekend for homecoming weekend. Rutgers carried momentum in the recruitment a few weeks ago, but sources have told me that in the time since, Duke has made up some ground. Scheduling an official visit to Rutgers is a positive for the Scarlet Knights. A couple of things to watch for here are if Harper schedules any further visits and if he plans to sign early or wait until late.
Five-Star Plus+ Jayden Quaintance
The Buzz: Speaking with Jayden Quaintance, he says his last official visit will be the one he has scheduled to Kentucky. Florida, Kentucky, Missouri, and Ohio State are the schools that Quaintance has scheduled/taken official visits to. For a couple of weeks, Missouri has been the school that has carried momentum. However, one source told me recently not to sleep on Kentucky or the G-Leauge in this one.
Four-Star C Patrick Ngongba
The Buzz: Patrick Ngongba’s recruitment has picked up a lot of steam since the July Live Period. His last four official visits will be to UConn, Kentucky, Kansas State, and Duke. The Kentucky visit he took last week. The other three schools, Ngongba scheduled second, upcoming official visits. One source said to watch for those three upcoming programs. Heading into the final three visits, I would say Kansas State holds the slightest bit of momentum. They are scheduled to get the last visit, and Ngongba and his family have a long-standing relationship with the coaching staff. The UConn visit is the first up for the group; that is where his first cousin and high school/travel ball teammate Isaiah Abraham is committed. The second visit will be to Duke. He is visiting during their Countdown to Craziness, the same weekend VJ Edgecombe and Cooper Flagg are scheduled to visit. Continue watching closely.
Four-Star SF Khani Rooths
The Buzz: Khani Rooths has one visit left on the books, Michigan. His other official visits went to Florida State, Georgia, Mississippi State, and Virginia Tech. Rooths has taken two official visits to Georgia, and one source told me recently that they would be surprised if he did not end up at Georgia. Another source said Georgia has laid a lot of groundwork to get this one done. Watch the Michigan visit and if he sets any others. Rooths says he plays to sign early.
Five-Star Plus+ SG Tre Johnson
The Buzz: Tre Johnson has taken six official visits. Kentucky and Kansas each got one, and Texas and Baylor each got two. One source recently reiterated to me they do not expect Johnson to get out of the state of Texas. Johnson’s dad signed with Baylor out of high school, and Texas head coach Rodney Terry was his recruiter. Another source told me recently that Baylor is carrying momentum here but that Texas’ push is not falling on deaf ears.
Four-Star SG Kiyan Anthony (2025)
The Buzz: Kiyan Anthony, the son of former NBA All-Star Carmelo Anthony, is a junior at Long Island (NY) Long Island Lutheran. The four-star has set his first two official visits. He tells me he will go to Florida State on 10/13 and then to Syracuse on 10/20. Anthony says he does not plan on taking any more official visits until after the season. Watch for Michigan and Indiana to get visits at some point. This recruitment is just beginning, but the story is starting to unfold.
Four-Star PG Zoom Diallo
The Buzz: Zoom Diallo’s recruitment has been somewhat quiet. He took early official visits to Gonzaga, Florida State, USC, and Arizona. Things have, however, started to pick up as of late. Diallo most recently took the trip up to Washington, what would be considered his local school. He also set a second visit to Arizona. One source said that Gonzaga was in a good position, especially after hiring RJay Barsh – Diallo’s lead recruiter at Florida State – but they also noted that the second visit to Arizona was noteworthy. Some things to watch with Diallo’s recruitment are the timeframe of a commitment and if he is able to set an Alabama visit (which he says he will).
Family Ties
While none of the 2026 or 2027 players are allowed by NCAA rule to be contacted directly by college programs or to take official visits, some of the players attending the USA Basketball Junior National Team October Minicamp carry some family ties to programs.
*Due to his age, Isiah Harwell, a class of 2025 player, was included in the younger group.
Four-Star SF Elijah Williams (2026) dad Monty Williams, played at Notre Dame and the NBA. He is also the head coach of the Detroit Pistons.
Four-Star SG Alijah Arenas (2026) dad Gilbert Arenas played at Arizona and in the NBA.
NR SF Baba Oladotun (2027) dad, Ibraheem Oladotun, played at Virginia Tech.
Four-Star SF Tajh Ariza (2026) dad, Trevor Ariza played at UCLA and in the NBA.
