Urban Meyer ranks Big Ten big three, weighs in on Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State

Former Ohio State head coach Urban Meyer was asked to rank the Big Ten’s big three during Big Noon Kickoff on Saturday. Ohio State, Michigan and Penn State are all undefeated so far this year and look like true College Football Playoff contenders.

Meyer declined to name a definitive No. 1 in the Big Ten at this point, instead stating that Michigan and Ohio State are tied at the top.

“This might be the strongest top half of the Big Ten in recent history,” Meyer said. “I’m gonna go. I’m gonna rank my teams. No. 1 is slash — Wolverines, Buckeyes.”

Michigan is currently ranked No. 2 in the AP Poll, while Ohio State comes in at No. 4. The Buckeyes do have the better win, though. Having won at Notre Dame last month.

As Urban Meyer pointed out, the good news is that we will get to see who is better between those two teams on the field before too long. In fact, all three teams will play each other this year.

“You know what, the big number there is 49. In 49 days we get to watch that game,” Meyer said of Ohio State vs. Michigan.

Meyer has Penn State at No. 3 in the Big Ten, but he doesn’t have the Nittany Lions too far behind. Penn State is currently ranked No. 6 in the AP Poll.

James Franklin‘s club is currently 5-0. It has played a fairly easy schedule, but it has been dominant for the most part. The Nittany Lions did struggle in the first half against Northwestern last week, before pulling away for a 41-13 win.

“I think Penn State is as strong… probably the best Penn State team I’ve seen in a decade,” Meyer said. “But I’ve got them as No. 3. So slash No. 1, Penn State No. 3.”

The rest of the Big Noon Kickoff crew also picked its top teams in the Big 10.

Mark Ingram went with Ohio State at No. 1.

“This is the best team in the Big Ten right here. They’ve got the best win in the conference, going to South Bend, winning in South Bend,” Ingram said. “Michigan has dominated. They haven’t played nobody, but they’ve dominated. … And Penn State’s looked good, too.”

Matt Leinart added that he has Penn State No. 1 at this point.

“If we’re talking about who you’ve beaten and how well you’ve looked, it’s Penn State for me,” Leinart said. “They are absolutely dominating everybody they play.”

Finally, Brady Quinn went with Michigan at No. 1.

“In order to beat the champ you have to beat the champ. … I’m going to say Michigan for now,” Quinn said.

All three teams will face off this season as Penn State will face Ohio State on Oct. 21 and Michigan on Nov. 11. Meanwhile Ohio State and Michigan will close out the season on Nov. 25.
