Up-and-comer Will Griffin bonds with Gators’ Ryan O’Hara, likes UF’s QB coaching

TAMPA, FLORIDA — Will Griffin, the talented 2026 quarterback from Tampa (Fla.) Jesuit, not only enjoyed throwing for the Florida Gators at their Friday Night Lights camp in June, he learned something he can apply to his game.

“This is something I really like about them — we talked about the triangle read,” Griffin said. “They read (the offense) in a triangle, which makes the read much simpler. I’ve started to look at my offense the same way. People say, read the offense high to low. Almost every concept (Florida) has is a triangle read and it makes it so much easier on the quarterback. So that’s definitely something that I picked up that helps a lot and I implement that into my game as well.”

Griffin, listed at 6-foot-3, 220 pounds, already claims offers from Florida and many others. With the Gators, he has built a solid relationship with offensive analyst Ryan O’Hara.

“I love Coach O’Hara,” Griffin said. “He’s such a genuine person. And I’ve met him so many times now. I like the way he runs the offense. He has a bunch of confidence in his team and in his players. That’s something I’d like to have in one of my coaches, too.”

Will Griffin showed great promise as a freshman

As a freshman in 2022, Griffin completed 106 of 187 passes for 1,653 yards, 18 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Now, he hopes to improve on this numbers.

“I feel like the biggest thing for me is my completion percentage because I know last year we kind of struggled with that,” Griffin told Gators Online. “I came in, tried to learn the offense as soon as I could. I didn’t get a lot of reps with my receivers in the offseason because I had just come in. That’s something I’ve been working on a lot this year. Accuracy with my receivers — just that we’re all on the same page. How to run the routes exactly. How to read the defense. Just get the playmakers the ball.”

Griffin is a lifelong Gators fan so he knows the lay of the land in Gainesville well. In June, he also visited programs such as Auburn, Georgia, Michigan and Ohio State.

“I know I’m going to try to definitely get up to a Florida game.,” Griffin said. “I’ve talked to the guys at Georgia and Alabama. I’m just trying to fit it around my schedule.  It’s not that I’m trying to pick a certain college (to visit). I have some games and I also have a bye week, and I’m just trying to see what my best options are.”

Griffin has no set timeframe on picking a college, but noted, “You’ve got to narrow it down eventually.”

Who potentially could be factors moving forward?

“Obviously, the Florida schools — Florida, Florida State and Miami,” Griffin said. “Because I’m from here and I’ve been to all those places many times. I think Michigan, Ohio State also. They do a really good job with recruiting, too. They’ll recruit anybody in the nation as long as they’re great. I would say some SEC teams and ACC teams that are close to where I am. I talk to Texas, too.”
