Tyler West says 2 ACC programs stand out with decision date in mind

Tyler West received his first Division-I offer March 24 from Appalachian State. Nearly four months later, he holds a handful of Power Five scholarships, with two programs standing out as he approaches a commitment.

After taking official trips to NC State and Duke this summer, the Wolfpack and Georgia Tech are starting to separate themselves from the rest of his offer list. The three-star offensive lineman took an unofficial trip to see the Yellow Jackets in June as well.

“I believe NC State Georgia Tech are kind of the main two that it will probably come down to in my decision making,” West told TheWolfpacker.com.

West, a rising senior at Andrews (NC) High, is in the final stages of his recruiting process. He plans on making his collegiate decision in less than a month.

“Probably in the next couple of weeks, I’m going to sit down with my coach and talk about my top three, top four teams and then kind of look to make that decision probably the first of August,” West said.

This timeline gives the 6-5, 275-pound lineman an opportunity to take a couple more visits in late-July. West plans on traveling to Georgia Tech for the second time this summer in a couple of weeks.

Even though he is an in-state prospect, Atlanta is actually a much shorter drive for the rising senior than Raleigh. That is part of the reason why the ACC school interests him.

“They’re just a lot closer to home than most of the schools I have offers with, and then, just getting down there to see what they’re building there, I really enjoyed my time while I was down there,” West said.

NC State remains a top contender in his recruitment, and a pair of visits this year help solidify that. His first trip to Raleigh was for the April 8 spring game. Despite the rain-soaked conditions that day, he got a lot out of that visit and continued to build his relationship with offensive line coach Garett Tujague

West focused on watching the offensive linemen work during the scrimmage and left Raleigh impressed by the unit.

“I just really enjoyed how they play,” West said. “They seem to be a close knit group of guys, obviously led by coach Tujague who’s a really awesome coach.”

Wolfpack freshman offensive lineman Cameron Todd hosted West on the visit and had nothing but positive things to say about his time in Raleigh.

Both Tujague and head coach Dave Doeren are important reasons why the lineman thinks so highly of the Wolfpack. He spent time with both of them during a June 23-25 official visit, and they maintained consistent contact since then.

“Obviously, coach Tujague, me and him got really close over this whole process,” West said. “I think he’s an amazing coach and, coach Doeren, he’s a really awesome guy too after getting to speak with him on my OV while I was down there.

“NC State, in general, they just have a really great program.”

West said Tujague thinks he could reach impressive heights while with the Wolfpack.

“He just really believes he can develop me into an elite player at the college level and then even further on to the NFL level,” West said.

With the two ACC programs emerging as the favorites in his recruitment, the lineman said his decision will come down to where he feels the most at home and where he can make the most significant impact on a program.

NC State has talked to West about coming back to campus July 28 for the Alpha Wolf Showcase, but he does not have plans to do so right now.

On3 considers West the No. 51 interior offensive lineman in the nation and the No. 27 recruit in North Carolina’s 2024 class. Duke leads his Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) at 43.4 percent.
