Two Tennessee freshmen to miss significant time due to injury

Tennessee will be without two freshmen for the 2023 season. Defensive lineman Tyree Weathersby and running back Desean Bishop will miss the season after sustaining injuries during fall camp, sources tell Volquest.
Weathersby had turned heads early in fall camp before enduring a hip injury last week during practice. He was truly settling into being a Vol when he met with the media early in fall camp.
“It definitely cranked up my urgency because I needed to be on my A game,” Weathersby said. “They have been learning plays since December and the season is right around the corner next month. I got to do what I got to do and I don’t have any choice.”
Before the injury Weathersby was pushing the older more experienced players because the staff saw plenty of promise and knew he needed to accelerate his development since he didn’t arrive until May.
“Coach Garner and coach Chop are definitely putting me in the fire,” Weathersby said. “They throw me out there a lot and I just have to get used to it and get reps. That’s all I can do. They have been trying to put me out there especially with me getting here in the summer.”
Weathersby is a part of a freshman defensive line class headlined by 5-star Daevin Hobbs and talented edge Caleb Herring.
Weathersby will now look ahead to spring practice.
Bishop suffered an ankle injury during Tennessee’s first fall scrimmage. The true freshman from Karns had been a flashy performer since arriving on campus in January and drew praise from Josh Heupel back in the spring.
“Not surprising what DeSean’s done,” Heupel said during spring practice. “He’s handled the transitioning into college football extremely well. We thought he was extremely athletic. I thought he had great vision and pace as a running back coming out of high school. He’s done a really good job of handling the communication system and not being too big for him since day one. I’m proud of what he’s done.”
Bishop will miss the season.
Tennessee still has two talented freshmen in the backfield with Cam Seldon and Khalifa Keith showing well during fall camp.
