Two Miami Hurricanes listed on 2023 All-Transfer Portal Team

Two Miami Hurricanes listed on 2023 All-Transfer Portal Team

Throughout the 2023 college football offseason, there were few teams more active in the transfer portal than the Miami Hurricanes and head coach Mario Cristobal.

After a 5-7 season, Cristobal and his staff have retooled the Hurricanes roster, adding 15 athletes through the portal with hopes that the new additions can make an immediate impact this upcoming season.

With the dust now settling after more than 3,200 names entered the transfer portal during the 2023 windows and rosters filling out heading into summer workouts, On3’s Jesse Simonton put together a 2023 Preseason All-Transfer Portal Team which featured two Hurricanes on the offensive side of the ball, with center Matt Lee and offensive guard Javion Cohen making the list.

Here’s what Simonton had to say about both Lee and Cohen and why he chose to include them on the 2023 Preseason All-Transfer Portal Team.

Matt Lee, Miami

Lee graded out as the highest-ranking returning center in all of college football, per PFF. The former UCF starter was an All-AAC First-Team honoree in 2022 and is an excellent interior pass blocker.

OG Javion Cohen, Miami

Cohen started 25 games at left guard for Alabama and now will finish his career playing for Mario Cristobal. Cohen was an All-SEC performer in 2021 and has played a lot of snaps the last few years. He is considered both a solid run and pass blocker.

Cohen and Lee are poised to make an immediate impact

Last season, the Hurricanes’ offensive line was arguably one of the weakest position groups on the roster considering Miami ranked No. 108 in the nation in sacks allowed (3.0 per game) and No. 95 in rushing offense (128.1 yards per game), so having two of their newest additions featured among the top transfers in the country is something Miami’s fans should be happy to see.

Both Lee and Cohen bring a ton of experience to a Miami O-line group that looks to be one of the most improved units under new offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson and offensive line coach Alex Mirabal

“He (Lee) has all the intangibles, is a heck of an athlete,” Mirabal said during the spring. “Great feet, can bend, can twist. Our offensive line is where it is from a chemistry standpoint, preparation standpoint because of Matt Lee. He is a difference-maker.”
