Two injured Alabama players ‘very questionable’ for Mississippi State game

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Alabama coach Nick Saban provided the latest on a pair of injured Crimson Tide players, linebacker Deontae Lawson and offensive lineman Terrence Ferguson.

“Both guys were unable to practice today,” Saban said following Wednesday’s practice session. “So that would put them in a, probably, category of very questionable.”

Lawson exited the game early in the second quarter, and after spending time in the medical tent on the UA sideline, he walked to the locker room with a limp and did not return to the game. The redshirt sophomore recorded one tackle and one quarterback prior to his injury.

With Lawson out, Alabama turned to a trio of linebackers in the middle of its defense – Trezmen Marshall, Jihaad Campbell and Kendrick Blackshire. Campbell finished second on the defense with seven tackles, while Marshall and Blackshire tallied three apiece. Blackshire, who was the fourth linebacker to see the field, also recorded one TFL and one hurry.

On Monday, Saban was asked where Alabama will turn if Lawson is unable to go Saturday.

“We played most of the game this last week with Jihaad playing and Trezmen playing, so that’ll be the way that we go,” said Saban to begin Mississippi State week. “Obviously, the depth at that position is going to become critical for us if Deontae can’t go, and we’ll keep working with these guys and try to get them ready to go this week.”

Ferguson also left Saturday’s conference opener with an injury. He replaced starting right guard Darrian Dalcourt, who appeared to sustain an injury of his own, in the second quarter but had to leave with an injury of his own before halftime. Dalcourt was able to return to the game, starting the second half at his usual position, while Ferguson was in the locker room.

Alabama will travel to play at Mississippi State on Saturday, Sept. 30 (8 p.m. CT on ESPN).
