Trey Amos possibly a missing piece for Alabama’s defense

Trey Amos, the former Louisiana cornerback who announced his commitment to Alabama on Tuesday afternoon, had double-digit scholarship offers shortly after submitting his named to the transfer portal. His stepfather, Darren Francis, and mother, Renee, went on two visits with him during the weekend. They knew what to expect, and quickly found the future home for one of the hottest names in the transfer portal.

Amos announced offers from Alabama, Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Illinois, LSU, Miami, Michigan, Michigan State, Ole Miss, Oklahoma, Oregon, Penn State and Texas A&M last week. His stepfather of more than 15 years noted a few others had also offered were unannounced. Amos took an unofficial visit to LSU on Friday followed by an official visit to Alabama on Saturday and Sunday.

The Tigers had hoped to bring the Louisiana native (New Iberia) back to Baton Rouge for an official visit this weekend. Alabama head coach Nick Saban and defensive backs coach Travaris Robinson had different plans. The Tide staff hoped to secure a commitment from Amos prior to his departure from Tuscaloosa.

“Coach T-Rob was really the main guy who sealed the deal,” said his stepfather. “We talked to T-Rob, Coach Saban and a few other before the trip. T-Rob was really the main one. We knew what to expect heading into the visit.

“Alabama is a top-notch program. They have the best of everything. It was probably the best college town I’ve ever seen. I have been to Austin and Baton Rouge. It was the best environment I’ve ever seen.”

Alabama continues to strike gold in the transfer portal

There was a high level of comfort for Amos and his family during the weekend trip to the Capstone. The in-depth look at the program from all aspects made the decision an easy one.

“It really felt like home,” his stepfather said. “Just the way the people treat you there; it’s like you are home. Everything is top-notch. They are upgrading everything even if it’s not broken.

“They have the best-of-the-best from the weight room to the field; really just everything is the best-of-the-best. I am very comfortable with my kid being six hours away. Mom feels great about the decision. We wouldn’t just leave our kid in the hands of just anyone.”

The Tide’s success rate in the transfer portal is well established including back-to-back years of first round draft picks on the offensive side of the ball. Coach Saban spoke with Amos and his family about the benefits of Alabama, on-and-off the field.

“Coach Saban, of course talked about football, but he also talked about life after football,” Francis said. “What really sold me was him talking about Jahmry Gibbs and Jameson Williams. He recruits high school players to help build his program. He recruits in the transfer portal to find a missing piece.

“You see what he did for Gibbs and Williams. He (Saban) knows what he is looking for. Trey might be the missing piece to the defense to help win a national title. He has to go in there and earn it, but he might be that missing piece. Coach Saban doesn’t try to build teams from the portal like some schools. He is looking for a piece and one that can really play on his team.”

Amos will arrive in Tuscaloosa later this month (players report on May 28). He will have two years of eligibility remaining, and will finish his degree (Kinesiology) at Alabama. Amos is expected to play cornerback for the Crimson Tide. Another area where Alabama has many hits including All-Pros such has Pat Surtain II, Trevon Diggs and Marlon Humphrey.

“The former players who come back to Alabama all talk highly of the program,” Francis concluded. “That’s another thing. You never hear anyone talk negative about the program. You can’t find anything negative to say about it.”

Amos is the fourth new addition to Alabama from the transfer portal. He joins quarterback Tyler Buchner (Notre Dame), tight end CJ Dippre (Maryland) and inside linebacker Trezmen Marshall (Georgia). Dippre and Marshall competed in spring practice after arriving in January. Buchner announced his commitment to Alabama less than two weeks ago.
