Travis Kelce on his future in the NFL: ‘I can’t put a timeframe on it’
Former Philadelphia Eagles offensive lineman Jason Kelce retired this offseason following 13 seasons in the NFL. But his brother Travis is returning to the Kansas City Chiefs for his 12th season with the franchise as he looks to continue building on his legacy as one of the greatest tight ends to play the game.
Between his slew of broken records and achievements that include winning his third Super Bowl last season, Kelce is extremely accomplished as he heads into the waning years of his professional career. And during Chiefs minicamp, he was asked how many more years he believes are left in the tank.
“I really can’t put a timeframe on it man,” Kelce said. “I love coming to work every single day. Obviously, I know that there’s opportunities outside of football for me and I think you gotta keep in perspective that I’m still a little kid when I come into this building man.”
Throughout his career Kelce has slowly but surely become one of the biggest names off the field in the NFL. Growing in popularity between the New Heights podcast that he hosts with his brother, television appearances from commercials to hosting Saturday Night Live, and of course his widely discussed relationship with Taylor Swift.
But even though there’s a high likelihood that Kelce can and will stay in the spotlight following his playing career, his passion for the game is still at an all-time high to keep him on the field.
“I know I’m 34 years old, about to be 35, but I have a love to do this right here,” Kelce said, “In the middle of the heat in June, I love coming to work every single day and doing this. So I’m going to do it till the wheels fall off and hopefully that doesn’t happen anytime soon.”
“But I can definitely understand that it’s towards the end of the road than it is the beginning of it and I just gotta make sure I’m set up for after football as well.”
Kelce missed two games last regular season and failed to reach the 1,000-yard receiving mark for the first time since 2015. But in the playoffs he looked like his usual self, catching 35 passes (a playoff record for tight ends) with 355 yards and three scores through four games on the way to yet another Super Bowl win. As it will be fascinating to see how he contributes to this year’s Chiefs team as they look become the first three-peat champions in NFL history.
