Transfer portal rundown: Who LSU MBB has contacted early on
As seasons come to an end and more teams have their final meetings, the transfer portal pool continues to fill up. For LSU, it’s a new opportunity to replenish its roster and restructure it before heading into Matt McMahon’s second season at the helm.
It’s still early in the process for all of these players and teams, as no one has even planned visits yet and most haven’t even begun cutting down their final lists. We’ll have tidbits in the coming days once we hear more information, but consider this a starting point.
From LSU’s side, veteran point guard Justice Hill, forward Kendal Coleman and freshman forward Corneilous Williams have entered the portal, which is expected to just be the beginning of the restructuring of the roster.
Here’s the rundown of confirmed names LSU has been in contact with so far.
Guards
Amaree Abram, Ole Miss
Jayden Taylor, Butler
Javon Small, ECU
Denver Jones, FIU
Nick Timberlake, Towson
Dayvion McKnight, Western Kentucky
It’s a really impressive group of guards that LSU has contacted, but the most intriguing is Amaree Abram, who LSU assistant coach Ronnie Hamilton recruited to Ole Miss a year ago before joining Matt McMahon. The other three names are the leading scorer at Butler, FIU, and East Carolina. All three are capable of filling it up, but Small is the only true point guard on the list here and even then I’d say he’s more of a combo guard at times.
Timberlake has heard from seemingly every high major program from UCLA to Arkansas, Indiana, Illinois, and several others. McMahon went in-home with him last week, but it still feels like a long shot.
Wings
Elijah Fisher, Texas Tech
Kamari Lands, Louisville
Khalif Battle, Temple
Dontrez Styles, North Carolina
All four are former four-star prospects who have a lot of upside in the right situation. Besides Battle, this group is all sophomores or younger. Battle is a finished product, though, coming off of a season where he averaged 17.9 points at Temple, with still two years of eligibility remaining. LSU needs more length on the wing outside of Tyrell Ward and these players accomplish that goal and add more upside.
Forwards
BJ Mack, Wofford
Robert Jennings, Texas Tech
John Hughley, Pittsburgh
Jaelyn Withers, Louisville
Jamison Battle, Minnesota
At the forward position, you have four experienced players who could all replace KJ Williams in some capacity, then Robert Jennings who would be more of a role player coming from Texas Tech. Mack, Battle Hughley, and Withers would all be quality additions and the team has at least made contact with them.
Mack recently put out a top ten with LSU on the list, while Jamie Shaw from On3 wrote that there was confidence within the LSU, Florida and South Carolina programs. We’ll have to see where he visits.
LSU also reached out to TCU transfer forward Eddie Lampkin early in the process, but it appears he is headed to Georgetown.
