Transfer Portal: Alabama trending for cornerback, Miami working to get in mix for top safety

The transfer portal is officially closed, but plenty of names are still on the board.

Alabama entered the spring knowing it needed to tap into the portal at some positions. The Tide hosted Wake Forest cornerback DaShawn Jones over the weekend and are now in the driver’s seat in his recruitment.

Former Tennessee and Louisville transfer Tyler Baron can be a Day 1 impact player wherever he lands. Three teams are still in the mix to land the 6-foot-5, 260-pound pass rusher.

Here is the latest intel on some of the top names still available in the transfer portal:

Colorado CB Cormani McClain

Intel: A source close to Colorado transfer Cormani McClain’s camp told On3 last week that the plan is to arrive at a commitment decision in the next one to two weeks. The former five-star recruit flipped his commitment from Miami to Colorado in January 2023. The top-15 prospect in the 2023 class is trying to run a low-profile portal recruitment. Nine schools from across the Big 12, Big Ten and SEC have been in contact, the source told On3.

Louisville EDGE Tyler Baron

Intel: Tyler Baron spent this past weekend at USC, coming off a trip to Miami. Ole Miss has remained in the picture, staying in contact with the former Tennessee and Louisville transfer. Sources indicated the trip to Los Angeles went well. The Hurricanes are still very much involved. No timeline has been set for when Baron could make a decision.

Arizona State WR Elijhah Badger

Intel: Arizona State transfer Elijhah Badger spent the weekend at Arizona, and he’s expected to visit Florida at some point. The former four-star visited Washington immediately after he entered the portal, however, the Huskies are not anticipated to be in the mix.

Wake Forest CB DaShawn Jones

Intel: Wake Forest cornerback DaShawn Jones visited Tuscaloosa this weekend, his first visit since entering the portal this past week. Alabama is well positioned and the leader to land one of the top available cornerbacks on the market. He tallied 37 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss, and led Wake Forest with three interceptions and two pass breakups in 2023. LSU has been pushing to bring Jones in for a visit. LSU secondary coach Corey Raymond made an in-home visit this past week. Sources tell the On3’s Steve Wiltfong the Tigers might not land that visit.

Indiana S Kobee Minor

Intel: The former Indiana cornerback was slated to begin his visit to Alabama on Monday but that visit has been called off with the Tide expected to land DaShawn Jones. Kobee Minor visited Mississippi State over the weekend.

Penn State S King Mack

Intel: Former Penn State safety King Mack officially entered the portal last Thursday and arrived on an official visit to Alabama on Saturday. Sources have said the visit has gone well but plenty of teams are working to get in the mix. Miami is hoping to enter the mix. Mack’s friend and former St. Thomas Aquinas teammate Conrad Hussey is now at Florida State.

Texas CB Terrance Brooks

Intel: Former Texas cornerback Terrance Brooks has a lengthy list of suitors. Among the schools who have reached out include SMU, Miami, Michigan, USC and plenty of others, he told On3’s Hayes Fawcett. Michigan has been in the market all spring for a cornerback.

Tennessee State EDGE Terrell Allen

Intel: The 2023 Big South-OVC Defensive Player of the Year tallied 65 tackles and led the FCS in sacks (14.5) and tackles for loss (28) for Tennessee State. Terrell Allen told On3 that he’s heard from Tulane, UNLV and Marshall, among others.

Auburn WR Ja’Varrius Johnson

Intel: The former Auburn wide receiver has been pursued by several programs this spring. Ja’Varrius Johnson has visited Arizona, Michigan State and UCF. He’s slated to visit Texas A&M this week, his agent Shawn O’Gorman told On3. He was initially slated to visit College Station on May 3.

Texas A&M OL Bryce Foster

Intel: A three-year starter for the Aggies, Bryce Foster spent the weekend in Los Angeles on a visit to USC. Sources indicated the visit went well but there’s been no clarity on when a decision could come.
