Touted Florida Gators QB commit DJ Lagway shows ‘great arm action’ at Elite 11 camp

Prized Florida Gators quarterback commit DJ Lagway of Willis (Texas) took part in the Elite 11 regional competition over the weekend in Austin, Texas — and On3 was there to watch. After seeing Lagway throw in person, here are some thoughts from Cody Bellaire, scouting/rankings assistant for On3 and a former staffer at Baylor, LSU, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.

Let’s start with the good …

“Perfect day, 70 degrees and enough wind for QB’s who have the arm strength to prove they can cut through the wind with the football. Lagway was and always has been one of those guys. In a loaded group, Lagway’s arm talent was evident. The ball jumps out of his hand. You can hear the heat come off the ball when he throws it. Showed great arm action, quick release that gets the ball up and out.

Looked comfortable when throwing on the move (right or left) and didn’t lose hardly any velocity on the football. Deep ball throws were great; this is really where he and just a couple of others separated themselves. Wind picked up a bit during this portion of the workout and didn’t phase Lagway whatsoever. Didn’t overcompensate for the wind, stayed true to his motion and delivered catchable footballs, which is more than what most could say on the day.”

The future Gator’s physical tools impressed

Now for the not-so good …

“The accuracy was an issue. In terms of ball placement, he was a bit of a rollercoaster. Ball tended to sail on him when he was missing and the majority of those misses were on intermediate throws. In my opinion, it’s more of a mechanical issue that is definitely fixable at the next level — just needs to work on being consistent with his stride length and letting off the gas at times. He has moments where you can tell he needs to throw with more touch as opposed to throwing the ball on a rope. He’s physically capable of doing it more often, just needs to get more consistent with it”

Here are Bellaire’s final thoughts on Lagway …

“Overall, he had a solid day. The highs were high and the lows were low.  But more often than not, I mostly saw highs. My biggest takeaway is that the physical tools and athletic ability is there. They are NFL level. Consistency is not quite there yet, but the most important thing is that the stuff you can’t teach? He has it.”
