Top transfer portal pledge decommits from South Carolina basketball

On Wednesday, South Carolina basketball transfer portal pledge Treysen Eaglestaff told Field of 68’s Jeff Goodman that he was decommitting from the Gamecocks. The 6-6 wing called the decision “difficult” but said it was “the best course of action” for his future.

Eaglestaff committed to USC at the end of March after averaging 18.9 points per game at North Dakota last season. At the time of his pledge, he was viewed as one of the top scorers from the transfer portal. Eaglestaff did sign with the Gamecocks, but that paperwork is not 100% binding.

With the defection, South Carolina now has four players committed in this year’s transfer cycle. Post players Christ Essandoko and Elijah Strong and guards Meechie Johnson and Kobe Knox remain.

The loss stings for a Gamecock team that needs scoring in a big way. Last year, Carolina was one of the worst offensive teams in the SEC and is set to lose its top-six leading scorers in Collin Murray-Boyles (NBA), Jamarii Thomas (transfer portal/graduation), Nick Pringle (transfer portal), Zach Davis (transfer portal), Jacobi Wright (graduation), and Morris Ugusuk (transfer portal).

South Carolina now has five open scholarships for head coach Lamont Paris to use.
