Top 100 EDGE Zahir Mathis slated to make first visit to Michigan

Michigan is gearing up to host one of the most wanted pass rushers in the country for next cycle.

Top 100 Philadelphia (Pa.) Imhotep Charter EDGE Zahir Mathis will be making his first unofficial visit to Michigan this week and is excited to get a closer look at the program.

“I want to get a good view of the campus and everything,” Mathis said. “I hope Semaj (Bridgeman) can show me around. I want to learn more about the defensive plan and how they go over film. I want to see the daily routine, so I can see if I fit. I want to see if it feels like home.”

Mathis has a connection to Michigan through former teammate Semaj Bridgeman, who just enrolled this month.

Bridgeman and Mathis were part of an Imhotep defense that was arguably one of the best in the country a year ago. The two grew close during their time as teammates. And yes, Bridgeman is actively recruiting him.

“He’s told me great things about it,” Mathis said. “I can’t wait to see him play. He’s a big role model for me. He’s one of my best friends. We have a good communication level and friendship. I just can’t wait to support him and see him play.”

Of course, Michigan should be able to make an easy pitch to top EDGE recruits like Mathis.

The Wolverines have produced NFL Draft picks Aidan Hutchinson, David Ojabo and Mike Morris over the last two years. That production has definitely moved the needle with Mathis.

“It impresses me a lot,” Mathis said. “It’s good to see them put out players like that. I like that over the years, Michigan has come a long way. They’ve been sending a lot of guys to the league. That has a big impact. I’ve even taken some of Aidan Hutchinson’s moves. Hopefully, I can be up there some day.”

Along with Michigan, Mathis has offers from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Michigan State, Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Tennessee, Texas A&M and a number of other top programs.

At 6-foot-5, 230 pounds, Mathis is ranked as the No. 5 EDGE and No. 39 overall prospect nationally, per the On3 Industry Ranking.

Michigan currently holds two verbal commitments in its 2025 recruiting class in On300 Miami (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna defensive back Chris Ewald and rising Buford (Ga.) High linebacker Mantrez Walker. The class is ranked No. 7 nationally with a score of 85.978.
