Top 100 DL Maxwell Roy talks early offer from Michigan

Michigan blitzed the Northeast during the winter contact period and offered several talented underclassmen, including Maxwell Roy.
The Top 100 2025 defensive lineman out of powerhouse Philadelphia (Pa.) St. Joseph’s was ecstatic when the Wolverines extended the scholarship.
“Michigan has had some great defensive linemen in the past,” Roy said. “That offer really meant something to me. I’ve been talking to their coaches. Right before the offer, I had a long conversation with Grant Newsome. It’s a great program. It shows how far I’ve come.”
Both Michigan tight ends coach Grant Newsome, who serves as the area recruiter in Philadelphia, and defensive line coach Mike Elston are building early relationships with Roy.
“(Newsome) is a great guy,” Roy said. “It’s always nice to have a connection with coaches, and Grant Newsome is a guy I’m able to relate with. He’s a great guy overall. Coach Elston also had a great conversation with me. He liked that I’m a three-sport athlete. He also told me that Michigan won’t lie to you. They’ll tell you the truth about everything.”
Roy who also wrestles and participates in track and field, added that he loves how Michigan’s defensive line has played over the last couple of years. In fact, it’s a big reason he has high interest in the Wolverines early on.
“It’s very impressive,” Roy said. “Like I said, they’ve put out a lot of great defensive linemen in the past. I really like seeing their work ethic and how technical the guys are. As a defensive lineman, I care a lot about watching technique and film. When I look at Michigan, I see the technique, speed and ability their defensive linemen have. That really impresses me.”
The next step for Roy is making his first-ever trip to Michigan, which he hopes will take place at some point in the near future.
“I would definitely love to make a visit to Michigan,” Roy said. “I’ve only heard great things about Michigan from people that have visited there. I want to see Ann Arbor. I’ve heard it’s a beautiful place. I want to see the facilities. I know they lift heavily, so I want to see the weight room.”
Along with Michigan, Roy has offers in hand from Boston College, Georgia, Maryland, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas A&M, USC, Wisconsin and others.
At 6-foot-5, 265 pounds, Roy is ranked as the No. 9 defensive lineman and No. 69 overall prospect nationally, per On3.
