Top 100 CB Devin Williams on first Michigan visit: ‘It was outstanding’

Buford (Ga.) High four-star cornerback Devin Williams took his first-ever unofficial visit to Michigan this past weekend where he was given priority treatment on campus.
“My first time up there was great,” Williams told The Wolverine. “I loved the campus, I got to meet some of the coaches. All of them kept it real with me. They told me what they would expect from me and how they run things up there. I really thought it was great. It was definitely outstanding.
“What really caught my eye was the players, actually. They were staying on top of things and always kept working. Also, I saw how much the coaches push the players to do their best and work even harder. Pushing them to get that extra work hard on and off the field.”
The flight to Ann Arbor was months in the making for Williams as he picked up the Michigan offer back in early December when head coach Jim Harbaugh and defensive coordinator Jesse Minter stopped by the Georgia powerhouse immediately following the Big Ten Championship.
Minter was among the U-M coaches who were with Williams and his family on the visit.
“I love Coach Minter,” Williams said. “He was basically tell me what Michigan is all about and how the team will take care of you and treat you like a human being. I loved talking to Coach Minter.”
Sitting down with co-defensive coordinator and defensive backs coach Steve Clinkscale also made a huge impression on Williams.
“Coach Clink kept it very real,” Williams said. “He basically said that he’ll get on me and will push me. He might scream or yell but once you’re off the field, he’s going to talk to you and be honest. Ask what you were thinking on the play and tell you how to correct it.”
One of the biggest takeaways from the visit, according to Williams, was learning the strength and conditioning side of things from Ben Herbert.
“I also love Coach Herb,” Williams said. “He’s a funny guy but he’s really different too because of the way he runs (Michigan’s) strength program. He doesn’t run it like how others college do it. He has a certain philosophy and I think it benefits them a lot.”
Williams will look to return in the fall for a game, possibly alongside Buford High teammate and 2025 Michigan linebacker commit Mantrez Walker, who’s been incredibly vocal about them going to the same college together at the next level.
“Mantrez is a really cool friend and he’s definitely trying to get me up to Michigan,” Williams said. “He tells me pretty much every day to commit too and always yells ‘Go Blue’ (laughs). He’s definitely pulling hard so we’ll see.”
At 5-foot-11, 168 pounds, Williams is ranked as the No. 66 overall prospect and No. 5 cornerback in the country, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media services. He’s also the No. 12 sophomore in the state of Georgia.
Williams also has an On3 NIL Valuation of $68K with 2,900 combined followers on Instagram, TikTok and Twitter. The On3 NIL Valuation is an index that looks to set the standard market value for both high school and college-level athletes. The NIL valuation does not act as a tracker of the value of NIL deals an athlete has completed to date. It rather signifies an athlete’s value at a certain moment in time.
Michigan holds two verbal commitments in the 2025 class – On300 Hollywood (Fla.) Chaminade-Madonna cornerback Chris Ewald Jr. and Walker. The pair are 14th overall on the On3 Industry National Team Recruiting Rankings.
