Tide in the NFL: Tracking Alabama players in Week 4 action
The fourth week of the 2023 NFL season is now in the books, and Alabama was again well represented with several former Crimson Tide standouts contributing across the league.
Six former Alabama standouts accounted for touchdowns in Week 4 – quarterbacks Jalen Hurts (Eagles) and Tua Tagovailoa (Dolphins), running backs Derrick Henry (Titans), Josh Jacobs (Raiders) and Brian Robinson (Commanders) and receiver Calvin Ridley (Jaguars). Ridley opened the Week 4 scoring by catching a Sunday morning touchdown against his old team, the Atlanta Falcons. Hurts threw a couple of touchdowns in an overtime victory.
Henry also scored twice, and his 29-yard rushing touchdown gave him 80 for his career. He is now the seventh player in the Super Bowl era (1966-present) to reach 8,000 rushing yards and 80 rushing touchdowns in his first eight years in the NFL, joining Eric Dickerson, Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Shaun Alexander, LaDainian Tomlinson and Adrian Peterson. Henry also rushed for 122 yards Sunday, giving him 8,620 for his career to move past Earl Campbell (8,574) on the Titans’ all-time rushing list. He now trails only Eddie George (10,009).
“I’m thankful, and I’m blessed,” Henry said. “Grateful for everything, grateful for this opportunity. I was a kid that just loved football, playing in my grandmother’s yard in Yulee, Fla., and waiting on my opportunity to get a chance to play Pop Warner and moving up and up and up the older I got. And to be mentioned with a name that I’ve heard so long as a kid, it’s a surreal moment for me. I’m thankful. God is good, and I’m thankful for the people that helped me get there.”
Defensively, safety Kareem Jackson (Broncos) had a game-sealing interception in a win over the Bears. It marked the 22nd interception of Jackson’s 14-year career. Also intercepting a pass in Week 4 was linebacker CJ Mosley (Jets). Mosley’s 11 tackles were almost enough to lead all of the Alabama alums, but linebacker Christian Harris (Texans) had 13 stops.
Going back to the Titans, defensive back Shyheim Carter was elevated from the practice squad, made his NFL debut and recorded a special teams tackle in the win over the Bengals. In other transaction news, the Saints waived linebacker Terrell Lewis on Monday after the Week 4 slate of games. The six-game suspension for Jameson Williams (Lions) was reduced, and both he and Cam Robinson (Jaguars) have been reinstated and are eligible to play.
There were 59 Alabama players on active NFL rosters for the fourth week of the season. Add in practice squads, injured reserve and suspensions and there are 74 former Tide players in the NFL. The Eagles have the most Alabama alums on their roster with six, and 16 teams – or half the league – boast multiple active players. There are nine teams with zero, including the 49ers, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Chiefs, Cowboys, Packers, Rams, Saints and Vikings.
