Tide in the NFL: Tracking Alabama players in Week 3 action
The third week of the 2023 NFL season is now in the books, and Alabama was again well represented with several former Crimson Tide standouts contributing across the league.
Four former Alabama standouts scored touchdowns in Week 3 – quarterbacks Jalen Hurts (Eagles), Mac Jones (Patriots) and Tua Tagovailoa (Dolphins) and wide receiver Amari Cooper (Browns). Tagovailoa threw for four touchdowns, which was one more than the amount of incompletions, in Miami’s 70-20 win over the Broncos. With Hurts’ rushing score, he now has the most rushing touchdowns (29) in a quarterback’s first 50 games.
It was a bit of a quiet day for Alabama’s offensive alums, but several of the defensive players made up for that with huge Week 3s. Cornerback Levi Wallace (Steelers) intercepted a pair of passes and finished with four defended passes on Sunday night, safety Brian Branch (Lions) had double-digit tackles, three tackles for loss and two breakups and defensive lineman Jarran Reed had eight tackles, 1.5 sacks and three quarterback hits. Branch is the first NFL defensive back to record 10-plus tackles, three TFLs and two PBUs in a game since 1994.
Prior to the Week 3 slate of games, cornerback Trevon Diggs (Cowboys) suffered a torn ACL in practice and was placed on injured reserve due to the season-ending injury. Other transactions included two practice squad signings with the Ravens adding – and activating – running back Kenyan Drake and Bengals bringing back quarterback AJ McCarron.
There were 59 Alabama players on active NFL rosters for the third week of the season. Add in practice squads, injured reserve and suspensions and there are 74 former Tide players in the NFL. The Eagles have the most Alabama alums on their roster with six, and 16 teams – or half the league – boast multiple active players. There are nine teams with zero, including the 49ers, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Chiefs, Cowboys, Packers, Rams, Saints and Vikings.
