Tide in the NFL: Tracking Alabama players in Week 2 action

Tide in the NFL: Tracking Alabama players in Week 2 action

The second week of the 2023 NFL season is now in the books, and Alabama was again well represented with several former Crimson Tide standouts contributing across the league.

Eight former Alabama standouts scored touchdowns in Week 2 – quarterbacks Jalen Hurts (Eagles), Mac Jones (Patriots), Tua Tagovailoa (Dolphins) and Bryce Young (Panthers), running backs Damien Harris (Bills), Derrick Henry (Titans) and Brian Robinson (Commanders) and wide receiver DeVonta Smith (Eagles). Robinson scored twice in the fourth quarter to help lead Washington to a 35-33 win over the Broncos and a 2-0 start.

Cornerback Josh Jobe (Eagles) made his first career start Thursday night and registered six tackles in the win over the Vikings. Wide receiver John Metchie (Texans) made his long-awaited NFL debut after missing his rookie campaign in 2022 due to leukemia. After missing the opener due to a hamstring injury, Metchie hauled in a 16-yard pass. Three Alabama alums started on the Texans’ defense, with Henry To’oTo’o making his first.

A number of former Tide standouts suffered injuries in the second week of the season, including Ryan Kelly (Colts) and Jaylen Waddle (Dolphins), who entered concussion protocol. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (Steelers) exited Monday night’s game against the Browns with a chest injury and was being evaluated at a local hospital, per Mike Tomlin.

There were a few transactions, too, with Miami signing defensive lineman Da’Shawn Hand from its practice squad. Two other alums joined practice squads this week, including tight end Miller Forristall (Rams) and linebacker Terrell Lewis (Saints). Linebacker Rashaan Evans briefly practiced with the Eagles this past week before he requested his practice squad contract be terminated, signaling he has options from several other NFL teams.

There were 59 Alabama players on active NFL rosters for the first week of the season. Add in practice squads, injured reserve and suspensions and there are 72 former Tide players in the NFL. The Eagles have the most Alabama alums on their roster with six, and 16 teams – or half of the league – boast multiple active players. There are eight NFL teams with zero, including the 49ers, Buccaneers, Cardinals, Chiefs, Packers, Rams, Saints and Vikings.

Here, we break down the Alabama player performances in Week 2 of the NFL season.
