Tidbits: How could the LSU safety class look?

Tidbits: How could the LSU safety class look?

The LSU football staff has now landed two safety commitments for the 2024 class, but the Tigers won’t stop there when it comes to adding high school recruits at the position.

So far, two Top 20 safeties are on board.

What will the numbers look like the rest of the way, and who are the Tigers trending to land as safeties coach Kerry Cooks put together his position haul this cycle?

The LSU Commitments

Maurice Williams … Williams got the ball rolling at safety when he committed to LSU in June 2022. And it was a great first piece given Williams is a Top 100 prospect and the No. 7 safety in the country on the On3 Industry Rankings. The Lone Star State native has a double-digit offer list that gave him plenty of college options, but he’s remained firm to the Tigers across the past year. Holding on to Williams will be key as LSU looks to maintain footing in the Lone Star State this cycle. So far, so good.

Dashawn McBryde … McBryde joined the class this past weekend, giving LSU one of the Top 5 prospects in Louisiana for the 2024 cycle. He’s also a Top 20 safety nationally on the On3 Industry Rankings. McBryde is already 6-foot-3, 200 pounds as a high school junior, and he just set the Denham Springs program record for interceptions in a season with nine. LSU needs to keep Louisiana’s best at home for college, which is why McBryde was a big domino to drop.

LSU trending for two more Top 300 prospects

Joel Rogers … With two safety commitments in the class, what’s next? Keep an eye on another local four-star prospect in Rogers. He has shined playing quarterback and safety at West Feliciana, and the Tigers made the offer at safety this offseason. Alabama, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas A&M and many other programs have verbal offers out to the Louisiana native, but it’s LSU with a commanding lead on the On3 RPM (78%) thanks to a trio of predictions for the Tigers. If he decides on LSU, Rogers would give the Tigers another commitment from a Top 5 prospect in Louisiana.

Kadavion Dotson-Walker … If LSU can get Rogers on board, he would join McBryde as two Louisiana four-stars to join the safety class in Baton Rouge. And if LSU can add Dotson-Walker, that’s two Texas four-star safeties in the class. It would be a very solid haul, and the Tigers lead the way on the On3 RPM (87%). Dotson-Walker has a double-digit offer list, but he’s coming off a recent LSU visit and has given the Tigers as many visits as the in-state Longhorns. SMU and Arkansas have both landed multiple visits over the past year, including one to each school in March. TCU also got Dotson-Walker to campus in January. With LSU recruiting his Duncanville High teammates, most notably five-star edge rusher Colin Simmons and four-star running back Caden Durham, Dotson-Walker is a name to keep a close eye on. Dotson-Walker is the No. 21 safety prospect on the On3 Industry Rankings.

More names (and, later, the NCAA Transfer Portal) to monitor

While LSU has offers out to double-digit safety prospects in the 2024 class, and a handful are already committed to the Tigers or other programs. Others are trending elsewhere, while LSU is the On3 RPM leader for Top 25 safeties like Rogers and Dotson-Walker.

One name LSU is expected to get an official visit from is Texas four-star Joshua Lair. The Fort Bend Marshall standout most recently visited Baton Rouge in March, and he spoke very highly of the staff and experience on campus. Texas A&M is the On3 RPM leader (27%), though other in-state programs like Texas, TCU, Baylor and Houston are in the mix. When it comes to programs outside of Texas, LSU and Washington both landed visits over the past month.

It’s likely Lair makes a handful of official visits before he announces a college decision, and the Tigers will certainly bring other safety targets in for visits. And new offers could also come, which would bring more recruits into the conversation.

LSU would like to add four safeties in the 2024 class, sources tell The Bengal Tiger staff. The numbers make sense given the current starters are at the tail end of their collegiate careers in Greg Brooks Jr. and Major Burns, and LSU doesn’t have much experience behind the pair.

Following the 2023 season, LSU is likely also to keep an eye on the NCAA Transfer Portal. The Tigers have added double-digit transfers in each of Brian Kelly’s first two seasons with the team, and safety could well be a need when the portal window opens next December.
