Thursday’s Dawg Biscuits: Updates on 2025 prospects Caleb Bell, Reginald Vaughn and Davian Jackson

Thursday’s Dawg Biscuits: Updates on 2025 prospects Caleb Bell, Reginald Vaughn and Davian Jackson

Step inside for the latest on several 2024 and 2025 prospects on Mississippi State’s radar in football and basketball along with transfer targets:

First Biscuit – Starting the day with basketball and the Class of 2024, on Wednesday I talked to sources about the arrival of that class to Mississippi State this summer. On3 three-star point guard Dellquan Warren told me recently that he is planning to enroll for the first summer semester and should be moving to Starkville later this month. Warren was Mississippi State’s lone signee in the November period and then On3 four-star forward prospect Eric Paymon committed to the Bulldogs this past March. In checking on Paymon, he is also expected to enroll at Mississippi State this summer but that may be later in the summer and not for the June summer semester.

Second Biscuit – Moving to the basketball transfer portal, on Wednesday I talked with sources regarding possible official visitors for Mississippi State in the future. Sources noted that the Bulldogs are not expected to host any transfers for official visits this weekend and as noted, the dead period for official visits begins on May 22nd (next Wednesday) and concludes on June 2nd. So if State is to have any official visitors before the dead period arrives, it would have to be early next week and that is a possibility. The Bulldogs are still in talks with former Vanderbilt center Ven-Allen Lubin and former Kentucky center Ugonna Onyenso, who finishes up his draft combine work this weekend. As you know, Lubin officially visited North Carolina on Tuesday and left that visit on Wednesday morning without a decision being made. That situation with Lubin and North Carolina should still be monitored but the longer this week goes without a decision, it could be a positive for Mississippi State. With two spots left to fill, the other spot could end up going to a guard.

Third Biscuit – Moving to football recruiting, on Wednesday I talked some with 2025 defensive end prospect Caleb Bell of Milton (Ga.) High School. Of late, Bell has collected several new Power 5 offers from Mississippi State, Kentucky, Arkansas and Colorado and that trend likely continues later this month. Bell had been in talks with defensive line coach David Turner for a few months before Turner extended an offer to Bell last week. Bell unofficially visited Mississippi State earlier this spring and said he will be back in Starkville this summer for an official visit. He also noted that he has plans to officially visit Georgia Tech, N.C. State and Arkansas this summer. So far he has not listed any top favorites and he expects to wait several months before making his college decision.

Fourth Biscuit – On Wednesday I exchanged messages with 2025 defensive lineman and On3 composite four-star prospect Reginald Vaughn of Hartfield Academy, and I also talked to a source close to Vaughn. To no surprise, numerous Power 5 programs have made their way to Hartfield Academy this month to check on Vaughn along with Hartfield Academy’s other top prospects. So far, Vaughn has not scheduled any official visits for the summer period but noted it is something he has been looking at lately. He continues to have the same list of favorites with Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, LSU, Florida and Louisville, and my source again noted that Mississippi State continues to be in a good spot with Vaughn. A lot could be determined this summer when Vaughn camps at Mississippi State and that is the case with several defensive linemen on the Bulldogs’ radar.

And for the gravy on top – And lastly on Wednesday, I talked with 2025 receiver prospect Davian Jackson of Westgate (La.) High School, who played several positions last season and is drawing looks as a receiver and safety at the next level. He holds Power 5 offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Houston and Miami, and said he has official visits set for Mississippi State and Miami for June. He talked well of his long-time relationship with Mississippi State receivers coach Chad Bumphis and believes Bumphis can help him reach the next level. Jackson said he has not set an exact decision timeframe but noted it could happen at the end of the summer and right before his senior season begins. He said Mississippi State is on top of his list at this point with Arkansas, Miami and Ole Miss also among his favorites.
