Thursday: Texas Longhorns talent on hand

In speaking with ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller yesterday, there’s little doubt that the NFL folks are significantly ahead of the general national media on the Longhorns.
While many college football pundits are in prove it mode for Texas, and perhaps rightfully so given recent history, the pro scouts – the ones who care strictly about personnel – are already moving forward with Texas as one of the country’s most talented teams.
That’s different than the last 15 years in Austin.
In fact, the most Longhorns drafted in a single class in the last 15 years came in 2007, when 7 were selected. The national championship team produced 6 draft picks the year prior.
So when Miller told me yesterday that he could see 8-10 Longhorns drafted in 2024, that is a significant uptick from any Longhorn team in recent memory.
And it definitely fits what we’ve been saying on this site. This Texas team, top to bottom, is clearly the most talented group of Longhorns we’ve seen in more than a decade.
In sum, it’s possible that this 2023 Texas squad not only knocks back the college football naysayers on the field but also the folks who sign big checks in the NFL. This team has the personnel to make both things happen.
