Three schools ‘in the mix’ for Florida State transfer Jamir Watkins

Three schools are in the mix for former Florida State wing Jamir Watkins, according to college basketball insider Jeff Goodman. Per his report, Watkins is being pursued by Louisville, Kentucky and Illinois.

The 6 foot 7, 210-pounder averaged 18.4 points, 5.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.2 steals in 30.9 minutes per outing during the 2024-25 season with the Seminoles. He did that on a 43% clip from the floor, and 32% from deep.

Per Goodman, Duke may have been in the mix to land his services, however, he added that he doesn’t know how “it’s going to work” out with the Blue Devils. However, he said that the “highest level schools,” are looking to add his services to their roster for the upcoming season.

Watkins began his collegiate career at VCU. He played two years for the Rams before transferring to Florida state ahead of the 2023-24 season. He signed with VCU as a member of its 2020 recruiting class and went on to play in 26 games during his true freshman season.

He was forced to miss all of his sophomore season nursing a knee injury before returning for the 2022 season. He went on to average 9.5 points and 5.4 rebounds per game on a 41 percent clip. He eventually entered the transfer portal in the spring, where he went on to commit to the Seminoles.

Now, he will have one year of eligbility left, and it appears he’s looking at schools which have the potential to make deep runs in March Madness next year. Each of the three programs that Goodman named made it to the NCAA Tournament, and similar success is expected for the 2024-25 season.

Whether it’s Louisville, Kentucky, Illinois or perhaps a dark horse fourth program remains to be seen. Regardless, he’s expected to become an instant impact performer for whichever team lands his services. Before college, Watkins was recruited by the likes of Virginia Tech, West Virginia and St. John’s, among other programs.
