Three & Out: McMorris and Hall for NU, more summer camp offers, and recruiting trends to keep an eye on

Three & Out is Nebraska On3’s feature in which recruiting analyst Bryan Munson gives his weekly takes on topical issues concerning Nebraska football and recruiting.

In this week’s Three & Out, Nebraska could be in a position to land a duo of Thunderbird wide receivers, more offers last week after summer camps, and some recruiting trends that are catching my eye. Here is your Three & Out:

Adding Hall and McMorris could be huge for Nebraska

What a difference a week makes. A week or two ago, I wasn’t sure if Nebraska would get either of the two talented Bellevue West wide receivers. And as things stand today, despite the recent offer from Tennessee to Dae’Vonn Hall, I think that there is a chance that Nebraska lands both of the Thunderbirds.

Even with USC out there for Isaiah McMorris, it seemed that Nebraska was in a good position for him. His unscheduled visits to NU showed a genuine interest to the Huskers. Those extra visits – the extra effort – weren’t missed. Nebraska cranked up the interest in him, too during the last part of the evaluation period.

And while Hall and McMorris aren’t “N” yet, you can see that we feel good about Nebraska’s chances here with our predictions.

What a shot in the arm these commitments could be. The production. The speed. The chemistry. The in-state angle can’t be ignored.

As a junior, Hall had 62 catches for 974 and 11 touchdowns. His season-long reception went for 80 yards. McMorris, who transferred from Millard North, hauled in 90 receptions for 1,297 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Hall’s 100-meter PR in the 2023 track season was 10.62 seconds. A time he improved from 10.98 seconds a year before. Along those same lines, McMorris’s PR in the 2023 tack season was 10.65, which he also improved from 10.9 the year before.

Hall and McMorris could join their Bellevue West quarterback in the 2024 class. Daniel Kaelin, an Elite 11 finalist, performed incredibly well in the Elite 11 fish bowl a week ago, waking up a number of people around the country with his talent. Kaelin won the Elite 11 accuracy competition.

Nebraska currently sits at 15 known commitments, three coming from in-state recruits. There are at least three in-state recruits that Nebraska is positively trending for right now that could double NU’s overall in-state total in the class.

Along with Hall and McMorris, Nebraska is also trending for Omaha North defensive back Donovan Jones who picked up an offer last week following camp and is taking a mid-week official visit.

The Huskers need to win the hearts of the players from the state of Nebraska. There are some very big targets out there like Hall, McMorris, Jones, and the No. 1 player in the state Carter Nelson from Ainsworth, who will be in Lincoln this weekend for his official visit (along with Kaelin, Hall, McMorris, Ashton Murphy).

Good timing to get the tides to turn with the dynamic duo from Bellevue West to have the big, in-state recruiting weekend on tap to start this Friday.

More offers following camp performances

The past two Three & Outs have included a breakdown of new offers following summer camp performances. Nebraska wrapped up their camp schedule last week, but we still saw more offers go out the door to 2024 recruits as well as underclassmen.

Here is a rundown of the new offers as a direct result of the summer camps from the past week:

Some trends that won’t be ending soon

There have been a few things that I have picked up on over the past few weeks as we start to learn more about Rhule and how he operates:

Rhule is about the in-person evaluations – What a great way to get a chance to validate the information that has made its way to the Nebraska staff ahead of a camper getting to Lincoln, additionally test, and then work out a recruit. The Nebraska staff felt very good about several recruits to extend a number of offers (18 in total, according to my count). Those offers had a direct impact on Nebraska’s current big board, and things changed rapidly in the past two to three weeks.Get comfortable with the DB commits – Nebraska already has five defensive back commitments in the class of 2024. They are hosting Donovan Jones for a mid-week visit, and the Huskers will also host Rex Guthrie, who picked up an offer at camp last week from Nebraska. The Huskers like Jones as a cornerback that could play safety, and they like Guthrie as a rover. In total, that could be seven commits. Still, I do expect some will outgrow the DB positions, move between the secondary and linebacker positions depending on the game plan, and could move outright to other positions.Shorter offensive linemen could be a thing – I am not picking on the 6-foot-3.5 and 6-foot-4 offensive linemen on Nebraska’s commitment list, I would love to have that height, but it is a little shorter than we have seen around Lincoln lately. The bottom line is Rhule wants guys that can move and bend at a high level. Nebraska grabbing recruits that can play – The words from Jake Peters come through here when Nebraska told the now offensive line commit that they would have offered him as either an offensive lineman or a defensive lineman. I can’t help but think about Jason Maciejczak, who Donovan Raiola is looking to play on the defensive line or offensive line. HuskerOnline’s Sean Callahan broke the news that Maciejczak has already moved to the defensive side of the ball.

There are several other players in the 2024 class that I could see moving around if the situation comes up. Nebraska seems to be focusing on the athleticism of the recruits, the testing numbers, and the ability to play other positions.

Another thing that doesn’t get lost on me here, and this may be for another conversation, Rhule doesn’t seem to be subscribing to the big NIL numbers out there for some of the recruits around the country. Don’t get me wrong, NIL will play a role, but I think beyond the athleticism, versatility to play other positions potentially, and testing numbers that Rhule is looking for people that want to play for Nebraska. I can’t say I blame him.
