Three & Out: Kaelin already recruiting, this weekend’s official visitors and academics playing a role in Nebraska’s recruiting profile

Three & Out is Nebraska On3’s feature in which recruiting analyst Bryan Munson gives his weekly takes on topical issues concerning Nebraska football and recruiting.

In this week’s Three & Out, we cover Daniel Kaelin getting to work almost immediately after he flipped his commitment from Missouri to Nebraska, here is a peak at this weekend’s official visitor list, and strong on the field and in the classroom stands out this year. Here is your Three & Out!

Daniel Kaelin to play a huge role as peer recruiter in 2024 class

Just days into his Nebraska commitment status, we are already talking about Daniel Kaelin playing a vital role as a peer recruiter for the 2024 class. There were the obvious recruits that Kaelin could influence, like his Bellevue West teammates Isaiah McMorris and Dae’Vonn Hall.

Kaelin seems poised to go beyond just his high school teammates or players from Nebraska. He wants to have a wider impact on the recruiting class than that.

This past weekend, Kaelin got the tip that the top-ranked player in the state, Carter Nelson, would be in Lincoln on Saturday. Kaelin, who was taking part in a quarterback camp at Warren Academy, was going to make time for Nelson.

Kaelin has been talking to Nelson and has known him for a while, but not as a future Husker. So when he got the news that Nelson was going to be in Lincoln on Saturday, Kaelin made an effort to get over to Lincoln to see Nelson as well as support the camp.

What’s more, Kaelin says that the plan at the moment is for him to take his official visit to Nebraska on June 23rd. Still, he says he is anticipating being in Lincoln for all of the weekends in June, either as an unofficial or an official visitor on the 23rd.

Kaelin wants to get involved.

Just days after Kaelin’s commitment to Nebraska, he was on the phone with Salt Lake City (Utah) IOL Semisi Tonga. “He contacted me already,” said Tonga. “He told me I need to get you in the recruiting class and that Nebraska needed me. I am looking forward to meeting him.”

Here is a call that I feel terrific about: Daniel Kaelin will perform well in the Elite 11. It may not mean much on the recruiting trail, but it’s something else for Nebraska fans to rally around regarding their quarterback commitment in the 2024 class.

Nebraska must win to get some top-ranked players to come to Lincoln. To be successful, the Huskers need to keep as much of the in-state talent home as they want. There is a pride factor of “I play for Nebraska” that the in-state recruits need to restore under Matt Rhule.

A peak ahead to this weekend’s official visitor group for Nebraska

The first official visit weekend for Nebraska isn’t the “big recruiting weekend”, but that doesn’t mean it’s not important. The Huskers have loaded up on difference makers at the skill positions and in the trenches this weekend.

There is good reason to believe that multiple players from this weekend’s group of official visitors end up as part of the 2024 class. This isn’t the first official visit weekend for Rhule. Those happened in December. But, it’s the first official visit weekend on a class from June to February and it’s going to be interesting to see how his staff performs in June.

Here is the list of known official visitors this weekend:

Some thoughts on this weekend’s visitors:

Nebraska leads in the On3 RPM for six of the known eight official visitors this weekend, which could spell for a number of future members in the 2024 recruiting class for the Huskers.

There are two players that I feel very good about Nebraska getting into the 2024 class: Mario Buford and Caleb Pyfrom. These are clearly the top two players from this weekend’s official visitor group that I think end up in the 2024 class for Nebraska.

The Huskers have some ground to make up: William “Speedy” Nettles, Peyton Morgan, and Dontae Carter. Speedy Nettles is going to be hard to get out of the state of Texas. The same can likely be said for Morgan and Carter, but Morgan is just weeks removed from raving about his visit to Nebraska for the spring game. I think that they can make a big push this weekend.

Could be a package deal: Jacorey Barney and Amare Sanders. Barney and Sanders know each other and they both know Nebraska commit Willis McGahee IV. Both of the south Florida targets are leaning towards leaving the area and the state to go to school.

It could be a clean sweep in the trenches – Pyfrom and Carlon Jones. I have already mentioned that Pyfrom is one of two recruits this weekend that I feel the best about ending up as part of the recruiting class. I feel very good about Nebraska’s chances with Bay City (Texas) defensive lineman Carlon Jones. Jones has a lot of quickness for a guy that projects to play a three-technique, and I think that Coach White and Coach Knighton are looking for some athletes along the defensive front.

As of Tuesday night, I am hearing that there are nine official visitors expected in Lincoln this weekend. We have only accounted for eight of those visitors. And while Kamari McClellan is still on the visitor list now it’s incredibly unlikely that he will be in Lincoln this weekend, but we are still trying to confirm

Athletics and academics play a key role in recruit profile for Nebraska

Here is something interesting to watch. It was brought to my attention by our very own “Sugar Land TX” here at RSS. In Twitter bios, you will see a little bit of everything, such as:

ClassRatingPositionHonorsHeight/WeightBible passageHigh SchoolSportsTrack TimesNCAA IDsPhone Numbers and other contact information

The one thing that I have seen a little more this year, and I don’t think that it’s by coincidence, has been academics. It’s something that he pointed out about Christian Nwosu who we recently did a story on after he earned an offer from Nebraska.

Nwosu isn’t the only one. There are several players that will be taking official visits to Nebraska over the next several weeks that are proud enough of their academic standing to mention it in their bio on Twitter.

Christian Nwosu hasn’t set up an official visit to Nebraska yet. His 4.5 GPA on a 4.0 scale stands out on top of his film. He’s one of those rare recruits that is going to have offers from Power Five to Ivy League schools.

As a bit of a sidenote to Nwosu he is the first recruit since I started covering recruiting, nearly 24 years ago, to ever ask to proof his quotes before I published the story.

Rhule seems to be locking in on strong physical attributes like speed. He’s not overlooking the academic side though. That is clearly a part of the profile that he is looking for when it comes to recruiting and offering a player.
