Thomas Meyer excited about Iowa offer
Following a visit to spring practice in Iowa City this past weekend, Class of 2025 TE/DE Thomas Meyer has a new scholarship offer from the Hawkeyes. The 6-foot-5, 210-pound Clear Lake native received the news from lead recruiter Jay Niemann on Monday night.
“I’m very thankful and really excited,” Meyer told HawkeyeReport.com.
A standout on both sides of the ball, Meyer finished his sophomore season with 28 catches for 309 yards and four touchdowns on offense and 38 tackles and 10 TFL on defense. While his previous offers – Iowa State, Kansas State, and Kansas – have been at defensive end, the Hawkeyes like his future on offense at the tight end position.
“When they first told me they would like me at tight end, I was pretty surprised,” said Meyer. “Coach Niemann just told me that they would like me to play tight end at the moment, but if I would like to play defensive end we could always talk about that too.”
In the early stages of the recruiting process, the Class of 2025 prospect plans to keep an open mind when it comes to his college position.
“I would be happy to play either one of them to be honest,” Meyer said.
Looking back at his visit to Iowa City this past weekend, Meyer enjoyed the opportunity to see the Hawkeyes at work in full pads at spring practice.
“I noticed that they hit each other a lot more in practice than some of the other schools I’ve visited, which I like,” said Meyer. “Their practices are very intense and it got a little chippy too, so that was fun and exciting to watch.”
The trip also gave him a chance to sit down and talk with Iowa tight ends coach Abdul Hodge, a former Hawkeye player that has experienced the recruiting process from both sides now.
“I think Coach Hodge is an amazing man,” Meyer said. “He gave me a lot of advice about football and also about life.”
While it is too early in the process to name any favorites, Meyer did grow up a Hawkeye fan so the new offer means a lot to him and his family.
“I grew up watching a lot of games with my grandpa,” said Meyer. “I’m just very thankful to be given an opportunity to play football and get my schooling paid for at the next level.”
