‘There’s love there’: Ole Miss has ‘been there from Day 1’ for new commit Major Preston

IMG Academy (Fla.) safety Major Preston committed to Ole Miss over the weekend. The three-star prospect chose the Rebels over Colorado, Florida and Virginia Tech. The No. 783 overall prospect is the 64th-ranked safety in the country spoke with OMSpirit about his decision and why he picked the SEC and Lane Kiffin.
“Relationships, man. Coach (Wes) Neighbors has been on me hard since day one,” Preston said. “There’s love there, they’ve been with me since day one.”
The 5-foot-11, 170 pound recruit already decided to leave Virginia once when he transferred to IMG Academy. And he will do it again for college.
“They’ve also been with me since day one, but Ole Miss provides a bigger opportunity so I took it,” Preston said. “I’d rather go somewhere where I can showcase my talent on the bigger stage.”
Major Preston tells OMSpirit his versatility stood out to the Ole Miss coaches.
“I’m a DB. Not a corner, not a safety,” Preston said. “They’re going to start me off at corner then move forward to other positions to learn and develop.
“I can play all five at a high level,” Preston said. “The staff loved me being so versatile and think I fit in their scheme well. The stuff they do they see in me.”
Now with his commitment out of the way, Preston is set to start recruiting himself.
“Ole Miss is coming hard this year,” Preston said. “Couple guys are not committed yet, but it’ll be a shocker when they announce.”
Development at Ole Miss was a crucial part of his commitment. It was the same when he left Virginia for Bradenton, Fla.
“IMG reached out to me after seeing my film sophomore year. I made a lot of plays, had seven picks my sophomore year,” Preston said. “The coaches were really impressed. They talked with my parents then I was there a month later.
“Development at a powerhouse was the main reason I chose to leave home,” Preston said. “And I wanted to showcase my skills on a higher level like I will at Ole Miss.”
Preston is set to take another official visit to Oxford, Miss., when the Rebels play Georgia November 9.
