The Price is Right? NIL will likely decide whether Keon Coleman becomes an Ole Miss Rebel

The Price is Right? NIL will likely decide whether Keon Coleman becomes an Ole Miss Rebel

In this edition of Franchise Player, a site-crossover podcast of the Ole Miss Spirit (On3) and Franchise Player (247), Ben Garrett and David Johnson have the latest on Michigan State transfer wide receiver Keon Coleman, who is visiting Ole Miss starting Tuesday evening.

Plus, the guys have some ideas on how to revamp the Grove Bowl and make it the can’t-miss spring football event Ole Miss has long needed it to be.

Here’s a brief excerpt from their extended conversation.

DAVID: That is the biggest story on the Ole Miss campus today. Period.

BEN: Easily.

DAVID: Michigan State transfer portal wide receiver Keon Coleman is going to arrive in Oxford this evening. A huge 48-hour visit. This is Ole Miss’ opportunity to land a proven, big-time receiver. It’d be a natural fit for him, a great fit.

In Keon’s mind, he’s probably going to be that Zach Evans, one-and-done guy (and) off to the NFL. But he might not. He’s got two years of eligibility to go. This is his second visit; he was on the Florida State campus over the weekend. Florida State had it in their minds thatwas going to be his only visit. Now Ole Miss is up.

BEN: How does Ole Miss lock him up?

DAVID: Obviously, in 2023, in you lock it up with NIL. This is a kid that had almost 800 yards in the Big 10 last year. He’s 6-foot-4, 220 pounds. He’s exactly what Jaxson Dart/Walker Howard/Spencer Sanders needs — a big body to throw to out there, break tackles, can run in the open field and has feather-soft hands.

I’m more excited about Keon Coleman than I probably am any transfer portal prospect not named Zach Evans Ole Miss has been able to get. He’s going to produce. All that excitement turns to disappoint if it doesn’t happen. It’s going to take a good football plan, but it’s also going to take a good NIL plan.

BEN: If Ole Miss meets his (NIL) number, I think he’ll be an Ole Miss Rebel.
