The latest recruiting intel on five-star CB Kobe Black

The latest recruiting intel on five-star CB Kobe Black

Recruiting is picking up in a big way for five-star Waco (Texas) Connally cornerback Kobe Black.

Black, the On3 Industry Rankings’ No. 2-rated CB from Central Texas, has locked in multiple official and unofficial visits over the course of the summer and into the fall. That gets going this weekend with an official visit to Oklahoma, one of the early heavyweights immersed in Black’s recruitment.

Black is set to make an unofficial visit out West to Oregon (June 12), his first time in Eugene. That visit has been in the works dating back to the spring.

From there, the five-star defensive back has two more June official visits — to Ohio State June (16-18) and back to Texas (June 23-25). Black was in Columbus this spring and has made a string of visits down to The Forty Acres in recent months, most recently in late May.

This spring, the buzz around Black has centered around the Longhorns. Not only has the elite defensive back frequented Texas, but Terry Joseph and Steve Sarkisian have doubled down on one of the state’s best, and it’s paying off in a big way.

“Texas is a family atmosphere,” Black said of the Longhorns, which lead for the five-star on the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine. “They’re building something. There’s a whole bunch of talent there and they’re being developed well, and that’s big for me. They want to move me around and play me at the STAR, at corner, and moving me around — that’s really catching my eye.”

Black has big plans for the fall

Before his senior season at Connally High School gets underway, the 6-foot-2, 190-pounder is expected to narrow his top schools down to five. The blue-chip defender is expected to make a decision after the season, according to sources with knowledge of Black’s recruitment.

Black has back-to-back visits set to LSU in late July and then again in-season, including an official visit set for Sept. 9-11, followed by official visits to Texas A&M (Oct. 7-9) and Alabama (Oct. 13-15). The Tigers hosted the Texas-based DB for an unofficial visit in April, but the buzz around Black this spring was focused more on Texas, as well as Alabama, Ohio State and Texas A&M maintaining strong presences with Black.

There’s a sense that Black is eyeing an environment that cultivates work with few distractions. That’s opened up the door for some programs to keep pace with the Longhorns.

Black, the On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 18 player in the country, placed “a whole bunch” of emphasis on spring visits and visits from the college coaches, and that’s vaulted the Longhorns into pole position entering this crucial stretch of summer and in-season visits.

As summer heats up, I still feel confident long-term about my RPM pick for Black to Texas. The buzz around the Longhorns is still real, according to sources involved in the recruitment. “They’re all in on him,” one source told On3. Another source noted that Steve Sarkisian has formed one of, if not, the strongest connections to Black, and that coach’s West Coast vibe has resonated well with the elite in-state defensive back.
