The 3-stars on the Florida Gators commitment list to get excited about

Admit it Florida Gators fans — you don’t get too excited when you see the phrase “3-star” at the top of a story. In terms of recruiting article headlines, yes, stars matter.

But the truth is, many 3-stars thrive at major programs. Including Florida.

The list of 3-stars who had successful careers in Gainesville is a long one.

Receiver Kadarius Toney, one of the standouts earlier this year in the Super Bowl, was a 3-star when he signed with the Gators in 2017. Kingsley Eguakun, the team’s current starting center, was a 3-star signee in 2019. Two years later Austin Barber, the Gators’ starter at left tackle, was a 3-star in the On3 Industry Rankings even though both On3 and 247Sports made him a 4-star.

And there are many more.

At present, Florida has 22 commitments and the No. 3 class ranking. Sixteen of those commits have ratings of 4-stars or better — and they’re the ones getting all the attention. But this very well has the potential to be the Gators’ best crop of 3-stars in recent memory.

Here are the On3 Industry Ranking 3-stars on the 2024 Florida commit list to be the most excited about. …

Josiah Davis, S, Nashville (Ga.) Berrien: From this crop of 3-stars mentioned, Davis probably has the least impressive offer list. But look at his frame (he’s 6-foot-1, 185 pounds), all that he does for his team (he also a dual-threat quarterback on offense) and the fact the Gators took him in March and that should tell you how much they value him. When you green light someone that early in the cycle, your staff hasn’t given him a 3-star value.

Marcus Mascoll, OL, Snellville (Ga.) South Gwinnett: The main thing to know here is that Florida beat LSU to land the 6-foot-4.5, 290-pound Mascoll. The Tigers absolutely wanted him and few coaches have the offensive line track record that belongs to LSU’s Brian Kelly. Here are a couple other reasons to like Mascoll: 1. He can play guard or tackle; 2. His brother plays at Clemson so he’s got good genes. This is an underrated pickup.

Teddy Foster, CB, Sarasota (Fla.) Cardinal Mooney: Foster is raw and that’s a good thing here — because he’s already quite good and probably isn’t anywhere close to reaching his ceiling. Foster didn’t start taking football seriously until a couple years ago. He’s fast and long (6-foot-2, 175 pounds), which the Gators love. Additionally, he is trained by a relative who played in the Big Ten and has a defensive coordinator who reached the NFL. Basically, he’s around smart people who can make him better. This is a player we are told improves by the week.

Michai Boireau, DL, Fairburn (Ga.) Creekside: With Boireau, the Florida Gators went toe-to-toe against Georgia and won. And that is significant because no program has had a better defensive line the past few seasons in college football than the Bulldogs. Boireau, listed at 6-foot-5 and 350 pounds, probably is bigger than that. He’s just massive. But he can really move for his size, is oh-so-powerful and has a good football IQ. Building stamina will be key, but at times he’s flat-out dominant.

We don’t want to undersell Florida’s two other 3-star commits — offensive linemen Noel Portnjagin and Mike Williams. But both are really raw right now. What we can say is that each certainly has the frame needed to play in the SEC. That’s a very good start. Now, we’re interested to see how much they progress this season.
