The 3-2-1: Boffo collection of DBs highlights impressive early haul of 2024 commits

Purdue is assembling a boffo collection of 2024 defensive backs. Who is the gem of the 20-man class? Who could be the next commit? It’s time for the 3-2-1.
Three things learned
1 – Purdue has an impressive collection of DB commitments
Seven, count ’em, seven players who can play defensive back have committed to a class that ranks No. 24 in the nation and sixth in the Big Ten by On3.
Earl Kulp and William Nettles are cornerbacks, while Luke Williams and D’Mon Marable are safeties. Jo’Ziah Edmond and Hudauri Hines could be safeties or corners.
The best of the bunch is Koy Beasley, who could be a cornerback if the staff opts not to use him on offense.
2 – Beasley is the gem of the class
The 5-10, 170-pound product of Cincinnati has a 92.87 rating by On3 and is the No. 4 player in Ohio. QB Marcos Davila is the Boilermakers’ No. 2 commit in a class that now boasts 20 players. And the class has five “consensus” four-star pledges: Beasley, Davila, WR Keondre Henry, Kulp and Williams. Not a bad start for Ryan Walters.
3 – Texas and Indiana have been fruitful
Each of those states has produced four commits. Davila, Henry, Nettles and DL Caleb Mitchell Irving come from Texas. Hines, Edmond, OL Jordan King and K Spencer Porath are in-state products.
All told, Purdue has commitments from players from nine states: Ohio, Illinois, Alabama, Mississippi, Florida, Colorado and Tennessee, in addition to Texas and Indiana.
Two questions
1 – What player could be the next commit?
It seems Purdue is in good position with DL Demeco Kennedy, but he may not announce his school until August. Keep an eye on DB Leontre Bradford, who may be down to Purdue and Missouri. Some think he may be a silent commit for the Boilers.
2 – Does Purdue have a good shot to land TE Tayvion Galloway?
The one-time LSU commit has been making the rounds. The four-star took an official visit to West Lafayette and is slated to be back later this month for an unofficial junket. That’s a positive development in the Boilermakers’ pursuit of the 6-4 Ohio tight end. Galloway also has taken OVs to UCF and Syracuse.
Netting Galloway would be huge for Purdue.
One prediction: Purdue will fly under the radar at Big Ten media days
Usually, the arrival of a new coach would create buzz at the media gathering, held July 26-27 in Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis. And, yes, people will be buzzing about what Walters has been doing in his first eight months in West Lafayette.
But the focus will be on Ohio State and Michigan and their national title worthiness. And Penn State has become a darling of the media. Could it crash the playoff party?
In the B1G West, new coaches at Nebraska (Matt Rhule) and Wisconsin (Luke Fickell) will get lots of attention. And the tumult engulfing Northwestern will be a prime subject matter, too.
Walters can just keep his head down and–in football parlance–grind. Sometimes, it’s nice to work away from the spotlight, especially for a first-year/first-time head coach.
