That was weird: Kentucky Tied with EKU 7-7 at Half
Wow. What was that? The Big Blue Nation was ready to see the Kentucky football team clean up its act, put up a bunch of points and win big in week two. Instead, they went in the opposite direction against EKU.
A week ago the Colonels allowed 667 yards and 66 points against Cincinnati. Through one quarter Kentucky had 67 yards, five penalties and a turnover.
The Cats opened with a three-and-out after a penalty wiped away the first down conversion. The ensuing punt was blocked, giving EKU quarterback Parker McKinney a short field to eventually run 14 yards for a touchdown.
Kentucky’s offense responded by getting stuffed on fourth down. Trevin Wallace forced a fumble to give the ball back to the offense with a short field. Once again, a penalty wiped away a first down run. One play later Devin Leary‘s pass was tipped and intercepted at the line of scrimmage. Three plays later Maxwell Hairston caught an EKU arm punt.
Did you catch all of that bizarre back-and-forth? My head is still spinning too.
To summarize it more succinctly, the Kentucky offense is still out of synch. Leary has not been as accurate as advertised and the wide receivers aren’t doing him any favors. The running game has not been reliable either. The UK running backs gained only 36 yards on nine carries.
Fortunately, Barion Brown was able to provide some much-needed juice to end the first half. He returned a punt 36 yards to get the ball inside the 25-yard line with less than a minute on the clock. On the next play Leary delivered a dime to Tayvion Robinson in the back of the end zone to even the score.
It was a weird first half at Kroger Field. Kentucky ended on a high, but the Colonels from EKU will get the ball first after intermission.
