Texas working to flip Auburn cornerback commit Devin Williams
Last week we saw Klein Oak cornerback Courtland Guillory come off the Texas board when he committed to Oklahoma. Today Shadow Creek cornerback Cobey Sellers will make his announcement with Texas A&M having a great chance to come out on top.
It’s important to remember commitment status is of no concern to the Texas staff. Nobody really comes off the board because they commit elsewhere. Texas has a strong track record of flipping prospects that even extends to the portal. Last cycle Terry Joseph flipped Wardell Mack from Florida. Now he’s trying to do the same in this class with Auburn commit Devin Williams from Buford, Georgia.
At the same time Joseph is trying to flip Williams, Texas is trying to make in-roads at talent-rich Buford. It’s no coincidence new transfer receiver Isaiah Bond is holding a camp in his hometown.
Somebody is playing chess in Austin.
Williams committed to Auburn back in February. Notre Dame finished runner-up at the time but backed off after Williams committed. The Domers view Williams as a potentially “truly special” cornerback prospect per one source.
When you turn on the tape you can see the truly special ability. He reminds me a bit of former Longhorn Duke Thomas, but, and this is important, with incredible ball skills. Williams is an acrobat when it comes to attacking the ball in the air.
Inside Texas caught up with Williams to gauge just how real UT’s chances are. We know they’re somewhat real since he’s going to take an official visit June 21-23.
Inside Texas: What was it about Auburn that had you commit so early?
Devin Williams: Coach Crime (Wesley McGriff) the corners coach, I loved him. Great dude, down to earth dude. I got to go to a Spring practice and watch him coach live. I loved his coaching style. I love his relationship with the players. He jokes around but he’s about his business at the same time. I connected with him and then Coach Freeze is a great head coach. He’s definitely building something to build Auburn back up to where it used to be so that attracted me to Auburn.
IT: How long have you been in communication with Texas?
DW: Since January I’ve been in communication with them. Me and Coach Joseph, you know Coach Choice, we’ve been back and forth. January is when it started.
IT: Are there any other schools you’re talking to?
DW: Texas A&M was in the picture. UCF has been trying to get in the picture a little bit. Those are the schools I’ve been communicating with most but Texas has definitely caught both of those schools.
IT: How close are you to Isaiah Bond, one of the newest Longhorns.
DW: Oh yeah, we go back. You know he’s a Buford guy like me. I was a freshman when he was a senior so just learning and seeing him and seeing the way he’s progressed is crazy. He’s really grown as a wide receiver. But that’s my boy, I know IB very well. That speed kills.
IT: Bond was a blazer on the track. Do you have any track times?
DW: Last year I ran 10.65. I couldn’t run this year I had a little hamstring problem. I didn’t get to run this year but yeah I ran 10.65. In the 200 I ran 21.3.
IT: As a sophomore, that’s wild!
DW: People compare me to Isaiah a lot.
IT: What’s Texas going to have to do to have a real chance here? Auburn’s a lot closer to home, do you care about proximity?
DW: Personally, I don’t care about proximity or distance. It doesn’t matter to me. I feel like I’m pretty committed to Auburn but Texas has been there since January. They’ve been by my side, showing me they really want me. Coach (Joseph) came by the school on Monday. He sat me down for about an hour, talking about Texas and how he really wanted me. I just want to give them a shot and see what Texas has to offer. I’ve never been there and I’d love to see Texas. I definitely want that Texas official and see what they have to offer.
This one is getting interesting.
Devin Williams is On3 Industry Ranking’s No. 216 recruit and No. 25 cornerback in the country.
