Texas trending with 5-star WR Ryan Wingo

Texas trending with 5-star WR Ryan Wingo

The battle for St. Louis (Mo.) University High five-star wide receiver Ryan Wingo has largely come down to Texas, Missouri and Tennessee, with the Volunteers thought to be behind the other two SEC football programs.

The in-state Tigers had been slight leaders in the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine (RPM) heading into the weekend. But coming out of it, it’s the Longhorns who are now on top.

Following an expert prediction from InsideTexas.com senior recruiting analyst Gerry Hamilton, Texas holds a slight edge with a 41.3 percent chance of securing his commitment. The Tigers trail behind at 34.4 percent.

“Texas head coach Steve Sarkisian has put the Longhorns in a position to win the battle for the five-star receiver,” Hamilton wrote in making his pick. “Sarkisian has prioritized Wingo for over a year, dating back to an unofficial visit in June of 2022. He recruited Wingo through the wide receiver coaching change, and has pushed all the correct buttons in the recruitment. Wide receivers coach Chris Jackson and freshman quarterback Arch Manning are also impactful for Texas, along with Austin being a city that would allow for Wingo to have a fun college experience and opportunities outside of football.

… With the continued intel in the last few weeks, I have entered an On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine pick at 65% for the Longhorns to eventually land the 6-foot-1.5, 210-pound playmaker.”

Wingo would be another major addition for the Longhorns

The dynamic playmaker is the No. 25 overall prospect in the 2024 class, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He ranks as the country’s No. 7 wide receiver and the No. 2 player in the Show-Me State.

On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons caught up with Wingo late Saturday night after the Longhorns 34-24 win at Alabama, and he likes the idea of playing in the wide-open Longhorns’ offense.

“This was a big win for Texas,” Wingo told On3. “They showed they can move the ball with this win over Alabama. I figured this game would be pretty even, so Texas winning didn’t surprise me. The quarterback was slinging it everywhere and it was fun to watch. I liked how the offense was moving the ball around everywhere.”

Ewers completed passes to eight different receivers and target his wideouts heavily with AD MitchellXavier Worthy and Jordan Whittington combining for 20 targets, 11 catches and all three scores.

Wingo likes the opportunity to play early in Austin given what the program will be graduating and seeing Sarkisian’s offense in full effect has impressed him.

“Sark is doing a lot with them and is moving the program in the right direction,” he said. “Coach Sark has them rolling.”
