Texas transfer forward Dillon Mitchell sets Auburn visit
AUBURN — Texas transfer Dillon Mitchell is visiting Auburn on Tuesday, sources confirm to Auburn Live.
Mitchell previously had visits planned to Miami and Cincinnati in recent weeks.
After two seasons as a starter for the Texas, 6’8 forward Dillon Mitchell entered the NCAA transfer portal while declaring for the 2024 NBA draft. He has two years of eligibility left.
Mitchell, a Tampa, Florida native, played in high school at Montverde Academy. He was a five-star prospect and the No. 4 overall recruit in the 2022 cycle. He enjoyed a dominant prep career, guiding Montverde to a GEICO High School National Championship. Mitchell averaged 12.3 points, 10 rebounds, and 1.5 blocks per game as a senior.
He was also named a McDonald’s All-American, making him the 21st in Texas basketball history to receive the honor. Mitchell also had a strong performance in the Jordan Brand Classic, scoring 18 points and earning MVP honors after leading Team Air to a 118-109 victory over Team Flight.
Mitchell was a highly regarded high school prospect when he started his freshman season at Texas, but despite starting 38 games, he averaged 4.3 points and 3.9 rebounds. His complete lack of an outside shot (0 three-point attempts) and 40.5% free throw percentage led him back for his sophomore season, where his offensive opportunities increased.
Mitchell finished Year 2 with an average of 9.6 points and 7.5 rebounds, as well as 1.4 assists, 1.0 steals, and 0.9 blocks. He went 0-8 from three and was only 59.8% from the free throw line, but his rebounding and defensive abilities make him an appealing transfer portal addition.
Thoughts on Dillon Mitchell’s recruitment
Auburn continues to look for another forward option and Mitchell is a high-profile option to be sure. Miami and Cincinnati supposedly received visits from Mitchell recently, but there hasn’t been much said about Mitchell’s recruitment past that. Mitchell is a player I talked about on The Corner last week as a transfer player of interest and the visit now furthers that storyline. I will say, if Auburn is going to land Mitchell, NIL will be a big factor. We’ll see how Mitchell’s visit goes and go from there.
