The Longhorns newcomers, save Kadin Shedrick, are all showing they belong in the Texas program and at a Power 6 program. Shedrick continues to rehab a shoulder following surgery in the spring.

Early returns are very favorable

In the days after Max Abmas committed to Texas, I reached out to a Division I head coach to ask for his thoughts on the 6-0, 175-pound scoring guard. The response was that he expected Abmas to be a first or second team All-Big 12 player.

Some wondered about the jump from the Summit League to the Big 12, but Abmas in 13 career games against Power 6 opponents has averaged over 20 points per game, including 39.7% from three. A look at Max Abmas by the numbers.

If the first few days of workouts are any indication, Abmas may be on his way to exceeding the initial expectations inside The Moody Center practice facility. His ability to score is elite in the college game with his range and ability to create space for others.

WAC Freshman of the Year and sophomore-to-be Chendall Weaver tested off the charts to begin his career in Austin. The tests he put up eye opening numbers consisted of vertical testing, agility and speed.

Weaver has already proven he can knock down open three’s and finish above and around the rim at the college level, so his summer is going to be all about playing guard at a high level. That is continuing to work on ball handling in traffic areas, and making quicker reads with ball in hand.

Texas still looking to add final pieces

Rodney Terry and staff continue to search for the final piece or two of the puzzle with the 2023-24 roster build. Texas will add another guard, and possibly could add two if it’s the correct fit. Texas needs one more guard with size. A 6-foot-4 guard that plays off the ball is the ideal fit. That could come from the grad transfer market, or internationally.
