Tennessee athletes had a standout school year between the lines. The Vols and Lady Vols also got their work done in the classroom, too. Tennessee on Wednesday announced record numbers in overall grade point average and record highs for both men’s and women’s sports.
The student-athletes had a 3.38 overall GPA during the spring semester, the best single-semester score in the history of Tennessee athletics and the 21st consecutive semester above a 3.0.
All 16 sports recorded a team GPA above 3.0 while 422 student-athletes (76 percent) received a 3.0 or higher for the semester. Men’s sports had a combined 3.26 GPA and women’s sports had a combined 3.52 GPA, both record highs.
There were 74 athletes who recorded a 4.0 GPA, the most ever for Tennessee. There were also 202 student-athletes who made the Dean’s List, the second most in Tennessee’s athletic history.
Vols AD Danny White: ‘Our student-athletes strive to be the best in everything they do’
“Our student-athletes strive to be the best in everything they do, and I could not be more proud of their achievement in the classroom,” Tennessee athletic director Danny White said. “To capture the All-SEC Sports title and then see these results academically speaks to their drive and determination to be elite.”
It was announced recently that Tennessee athletics for a second straight year won the SEC All-Sports title, the award given annually by USA Today Sports Network. The Vols and Lady Vols finished first in both men’s and women’s standings.
The Tennessee men finished first in the All-Sports standings last year while the Lady Vols finished second. In total, 11 Tennessee teams finished in the top four in the SEC in their respective standings this year.
Tennessee is second SEC school to finish first in both men’s, women’s All-Sports Standings
The Lady Vols swept both the SEC championships in the regular season and the SEC Tournament. Tennessee Football finished second in the SEC East, men’s cross country finished second in the conference, as did women’s swimming and diving.
Men’s tennis finished second and men’s swimming and diving was third. Women’s basketball was third, men’s golf finished tied for third, soccer and women’s tennis were also third, along with men’s out door track and field.
Tennessee is only the second school to finish first in both the men’s and women’s All-Sports Standings. The Vols finished ahead of Florida, Georgia and Alabama while the Lady Vols finished ahead of Florida, Georgia and LSU.
White has been on the job at Tennessee for just over two years, since January 2021. He was hired to replace Phillip Fulmer. White hired Josh Heupel as his new head football coach, to replace Jeremy Pruitt, a week after taking over as athletic director.
Heupel led the Vols to a 7-6 record and a trip to the Music City Bowl in Year 1. Tennessee in Year 2 under Heupel won 10 games in the regular season for the first time since 2003 and finished with an 11-win season for the first time since 2001 after beating Clemson 31-14 in the Orange Bowl in Miami in December.
