Talking Gators with 4-star WR Mario Craver

Talking Gators with 4-star WR Mario Craver

PINSON, ALABAMA — Four-star receiver Mario Craver of Clay-Chalkville (Ala.) continues to say Florida has a slight lead in his recruitment.

“Still Florida (in front),” Craver told Gators Online on Tuesday. “I’d say it’s like 60-40 with them and Auburn.”

Where does Craver, the No. 43 receiver in the country according to the On3 Industry Ranking, sit on the Gators’ board? That much isn’t known on our end.

But he told us he hears from the Florida staff a lot — namely receivers coach Billy Gonzales.

Tuesday, Craver chatted with On3 to give the latest on his recruitment. That included his thoughts on the Gators.

Mario Craver on Florida

He seems to like Gonzales: “I think he’s a very experienced guy and I know that he knows what it takes to get to the next level. And he’s had guys that have been great and had success in the league. I know he can push to get me to the next level.”

His visits to Gainesville are different: “Every time I go there I’m just chilling with the staff and just chilling with the players.”

He talks often to the staff and expects Florida to visit Clay-Chalkville soon: “Coach Chase (Clark) and coach Billy G. said (the Gators) definitely will be up to see me this spring. The last time I talked to Coach G. was last Saturday after my state track meet. I talk to them just about every day, every chance they get.”

If he signs with Florida, this would be the reason: “Just because that’s where I see myself being at the next four years. And I’ve been the most comfortable (there) and I feel like that fits me the most.”

The competition for Mario Craver

It’s a three-horse race right now with Florida, Auburn and Ole Miss. He said all three programs will get official visits, but added officials could go to other schools, too.

“I’d say Auburn the most,” Craver said. “Florida is telling me to take my time. They’re going to be there whenever.”

Craver hopes to have a commitment before fall practice begins.

The officials will be significant, he told us.

“It’s going to be big,” Craver said.

His official visit date with Florida is not yet set in stone. He said it will take place either the first or second weekend in June.

And finally …

Per Craver, these are his numbers at the state track and field meet:

Long jump: 23-1 feet; second place

100 meters: 10.8; fourth place

4×100: 42.2; first place

He competed in all three events despite having a broken toe. His right foot was in a cast Tuesday.
