Swamp Secrets Plus: Florida Gators in top two for TE Walter Matthews III
Arguably the top tight end target on Florida’s board returned to Gainesville on Saturday, and it was one of the more important visits for the Gators in recent weeks.
Walter Matthews III, an On300 prospect who measures in at 6-foot-7, 245 pounds, is a familiar name who has been viewed as one of the more likely additions in recent months; however, once tight ends coach William Peagler left for the NFL, I chalked up this recruitment as a wait-and-see.
Now spearheading the Gators’ pursuit is new tight ends coach Russ Callaway. Matthews told me earlier in the week that the relationship with Callaway is still a work in progress, but after returning to campus and finally meeting the assistant, Florida has regained some serious momentum.
Here is what Gators Online is hearing in the latest edition of Swamp Secrets Plus.
The Gators climb into the top two for Walter Matthews
After today’s experience in the Swamp, the Hiram (Ga.) standout says the Gators are in his top two. USC is the other school at the top of his list. He said UF is at the “very, very, very top” but confirmed that the Gators and Trojans are the top-two options right now.
Matthews has an official visit scheduled with the Gators for June 9-11. Earlier in the week, he told me the plan was to schedule an official visit while in town and that is exactly what happened. He believes USC will be playing host during the first weekend of June.
When comparing Russ Callaway and William Peagler, Matthews said Callaway is more of an offensive guru. He mentioned the words “coaching minded.” UF likes his ability to high-point the ball and stretch the field as a bigger tight end. Callaway did a good job of breaking down Matthews’ projected role in Gainesville.
If all goes as planned, Matthews will be making his decision sometime in the summer. He plans to take his official visits first though. The On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine is favoring the Gators with odds of 37.9 percent. Ohio State, Michigan, Georgia and FSU are some other notable offers.
As for myself, due to proximity, I definitely like the Gators’ chances more than USC right now.
On3 Scouting Report
Large-bodied offensive mismatch whose athleticism for his size allows him to separate from defenders with ease. Tremendous build and frame. Strong hands at the catch point.
Bouncy on the hardwood and shows explosiveness and body control. Need to see some development in his route running and hip fluidity but has immense potential and upside.
Stay tuned to Gators Online.
