Steve Spurrier makes emphatic prediction on Alabama vs Texas

Steve Spurrier makes emphatic prediction on Alabama vs Texas

Arguably, the biggest matchup of Week 2 in college football will be when the Texas Longhorns head east to take on the Alabama Crimson Tide in a matchup of top-15 teams. Experts across the country are giving their two cents on this showdown of college football powers. On a recent episode of The Paul Finebaum Show, it was legendary SEC head coach Steve Spurrier’s turn to share his thoughts.

Spurrier is staying true to his SEC ties, predicting a Crimson Tide victory at home. But how he sees Alabama winning has Alabama fans praising the former Florida and South Carolina head coach and Texas fans booing him.

“I do think Alabama is gonna beat Texas. Let me throw that in there. I think they’ll beat Texas [by] one or two touchdowns, at least,” said Spurrier.

Alabama enters Saturday’s game as seven-point favorites at most major betting companies. So Spurrier’s touchdown prediction is on par with how most see the game going down. The Head Ball Coach sees one player coming up big for The Crimson Tide: quarterback Jalen Milroe. Spurrier believes Milroe will lead Alabama to a significant victory on Saturday despite not seeing his performance against MTSU to kick off the 2023 season.

“I didn’t see a lot of that. But I do know — just like Auburn and Hugh Freeze, you see the highlights — these teams that have a quarterback that can run is extra special. Even in the Duke win, their quarterback Riley Leonard had about a 35, 40-yard touchdown run and it [looked] like the Clemson players weren’t even trying to tackle him. He scooted down the sidelines and went in. But I’ll tell you what, those quarterbacks they can run a bit are very good. But also the Colorado quarterback, Shedeur, he can run a bit, but he’s a beautiful passer. So the ability to run’s good but when you do both, that’s certainly the best.”

Milroe impressed in his 2023 debut, shredding the Blue Raiders defense leading Alabama to a 56-7 victory. The sophomore quarterback accounted for five of the Crimson Tide’s seven touchdowns in the game. Milroe threw for 194 yards, completing 13 of his 18 pass attempts with three passing touchdowns while rushing for another 48 yards on seven carries with two house calls on the ground.

The Texas defense is more than a few steps ahead of Middle Tennessee State’s in terms of player quality and production on the field, to put it nicely. So repeating that performance against the Longhorns might be a tall task for the Crimson Tide quarterback. But if he can, he’ll prove Spurrier and others across the country right as Alabama picks us the win against Texas for the second straight season.
