Status quo in the Playoff rankings: Texas ranked No. 3, seeded No. 2 in latest rankings

After a weekend where a number of teams may have seen their College Football Playoff dreams dashed and ahead of a slate of games where rivalry matchups will take center stage, the Texas Longhorns were again ranked No. 3 in the latest CFP top 25.

Because the Longhorns are currently in first place in the SEC, they were listed as the No. 2 seed in the projected 12-team playoff bracket despite being ranked behind No. 2 Ohio State.

Only conference champions can occupy top-four seeds, so the Buckeyes were bumped back to the No. 5 seed despite being ranked No. 2 as a result of being behind fellow Big 10 team No. 1 Oregon in the rankings.

Texas’ upcoming opponent, Texas A&M, was ranked No. 20.

The Longhorns were joined by a number of SEC teams in the rankings, including No. 21 Missouri, No. 20 Texas A&M, No. 15 South Carolina, No. 14 Ole Miss, No. 13 Alabama, No. 8 Tennessee, and No. 7 Georgia.

Notable movement in the rankings included SMU moving from up No. 13 to No. 9, and Indiana dropping from No. 5 to No. 10.

Ole Miss dropped from No. 9 to No. 14, and Alabama dropped from No. 7 to No. 13 after losses.

Tennessee moved up from No. 11 to No. 8.

Georgia moved up from No. 10 to No. 7.

Texas travels to College Station this weekend to face the Aggies in Kyle Field for the first time since 2011. The game will kick off at 6:30 p.m. and ABC will televise the contest.

These teams are first place in their respective conferences and occupy the position a conference champion would for the purposes of the current projections.
